Naw, millipedes don't bite. They can secrete a stinky, bitter fluid if they're scared, but it washes off (and one can just avoid scaring them). They feel weird when they walk on you--all those pointy little feet!

My wife wanted to get a standard poodle, and I was joking that if she did, I would name it after the famous buttrock vocalist and tequila entrepreneur. Then she brought home a big black Newfie-chow mix from the local animal shelter, and the kids named him Sammy.

If I knew him better before I named him, his name would be Erroll Garner Jr., because he grunts just like that jazz pianist.

16. Teddy de Lovely... shelty mix.. some golden retriever way back..

he was a starving stray puppy about 2 months old that kept getting into a movie set while they were filming.. he originally was named Eddie de Lovely, after a character in the movie.. but my wife didn't like the charctor..so she changed it...

he is one of those Happy dogs.. smiles real big a lot, he sorta looks like the tog in the Bingo movies only smaller and more shelty.

he is so full of love.. when you are sick he wont leave your side, he lays beside you with his paw over your chest, and worries so. he has a little brother Linus, a toy poodle, built like a barrel, they are attached at the hip.

one day Linus has the rawhide bone.. chewing manically on the bed.. teddy walks up to the door and looks at him for about a minute, he turns around and goes over to their toy box.. and looks and looks at the toys.. he gets a green tennis ball and and sneaks quietly into the bedroom tippy toes around to the other side and every so stealthy climbs up on the bed.. while Linus is mindlessly chewing away at the bone.. he stalks up behind him and turns his head to the side and Throws the ball out the door!! with a quick flip!! before the ball bounces the the 3rd time Linus is off the bed and has it.. he is strutting back and as he gets to the doorway he sees teddy laying in his place chewing on the bone and his jaw drops and the ball falls and bounces on the floor in realization he has been had again..

this is the never ending "I want the bone" game.. another time linus is asleep beside my wife in her chair.. with the bone right in front of his nose.. where he fell asleep from exhaustion from fiercely chewing on it.. Teddy walks up and looks at the bone with his nose about 6 inches from it for a while.. he goes over to the toy box and looks and looks and finally gets a small squeaky toy. he comes back and sneaks up and puts the squeaky toy by the bone and then ever sooooo slowly picks up the bone and tippy toes about 6 feet away then breaks into a strutting swagger.. like he really got away with something big..

they are a constant source of entertainment and love.

we call him our Buddha Dog, he is such a teacher of unconditional love and patience.

The term Byzantine and Greek are really interchangeable, so thats why its easy to see why the book you are talking about said Greek. Since the last emperor was killed in 1453, it would be a lot easier for the book to say "Greek", than "Byzantine". But Greek Culture and Byzantine Culture are really one and the same.

As an interesting side note, Byzantium has not totally died as a concept, as especially, the Greek Orthodox Church considers itself as protectors of Byzantine Culture and ideas.

62. Have you ever been to the museum in D.C.?

I'm trying to think of the name of it. It's on a former private estate with huge gardens. Dumbarton Oaks! It is really spectacular. Lots of gold jewelry and such, very ornate and very Byzantine. It's the biggest Byzantine collection I've seen. One thing I'm sorry about is that I've been to Italy seven times and never been to Ravenna to see the mosaics there. I've been to two primo Etruscan museums, though, and the Etruscans were pretty cool, too.

I have been to Greek Orthodox churches several times, to the services as well as on tours. There's a large one in Atlanta that puts on a Greek festival, or used to -- I rarely read the Atlanta paper nowdays. For years we went every year to watch the dancing, hear the music, eat the food, buy baklava and other pastries to bring home. You can tour the sanctuary, too -- guided tours. It's large enough to be a cathedral but I can't recall if it is. Modern, but some of the ikons were nice.

...there was a traveling exhibition that came to our arts center here last winter, and had some beautiful pieces.

There has been a relatively new Greek Orthodox Church that has opened up here - Nashville - and has a yearly Greek festival we go to. The Church is historically very accurate, very large with the round dome, and looks like something right out of Istanbul. The architecture is pure Byzantine, and is a reminder that Byzantine Culture and art is alive and well...

65. Oh, I know Nashville a bit, my

mother-in-law was born and raised there and my husband was born and half-way raised there before they moved away. They lived in Berry Hill, which I read has lots of shops now, is sort of trendy? His mother's parents lived way out on Granny White Pike in a huge house they'd built when I knew them but they had a big, old house in town when my husband was younger. It looked more interesting to me, though I never saw the inside of it. I'd like to visit Nashville again, come up to the American Quilter's Society's August show, go to the Parthenon, etc. We haven't been there since we buried his grandmother, the close family all being gone.

If you ever get a chance to go to D.C., do it, and see Dumbarton Oaks. The Smithsonian Museums are good, too, but Dumbarton Oaks is very special. They have a large collection of pre-Columbian textiles, which is another long-time interest of mine, and many other fine things from different times and places. I think it's probably worth spending two days there; we spent hours in the museums and then more hours in the gardens, walking a lot. First-class memories!

Yeah, Berry Hill is now a retail/commercial business area. Most of the homes have been rezoned for commercial businesses. The Parthenon is great, especially since they have clad the Athena statue in gold leaf. Its really a beautiful thing to see. My wife is a quilter, and goes to that show every year along with the one in Paducah. This year, she's going to have one of her quilts exhibited at the show in LaConner(sp?), WA.

I've been to DC a couple of times, and have been to the Smithsonian. The Smithsonian alone can occupy a whole vacation. But both times I've been to DC, I had a great time.

tell your wife if she has never been to the show of quilts from japan that's in mcminnville, tn, we;ve found it very worthwhile. it's about 2 1/2 hours up from ga for us but much closer for you, iirc. a friend and i go to the japanese quilt show every year. the museum has four or five interesting old quilts, too, all worth seeing. they have a web site.

oh, yeah, i'm pretty sure it was a fabric store in berry hill i found online. i'll bet you're not surprised.

We have a cat named Tony (I didn't name him). He was named that because of Tony the Tiger, although he is not stripped. A Pionus parrot named Willow after the Buffy character. A black-masked lovebird named Caesar (pronounced K-zar, the Celtic pronunciation). A Quaker named Illapa, after the Incan god of thunder (we thought she was a he). We have several zebra finches. One is no longer with us, Gnowee, the Australian Aboriginal goddess of all creation. She was our first finch and produced several babies before being killed by Illapa. Her mate was Thorn (he is still with us). His new mate, an almost all white Zebra finch, is named Snowy because she is white and a tribute of sorts to Gnowee. Then we have (mates):

Bianca ("white" in Italian (she has a white head) and Alexander (the Great)

Diana (Wonder Woman's other name) and Rogue (because he is a mess)

Antony (no "h") and Cleopatra

A black-hooded nun called Mystique (X-Men) and a Spice Finch named Indra (Hindu mythology/religion, since spice finches are from India).

He has never bothered them. It is always best to keep an eye on them, but the bigger problem now is the birds trying to bite his tail. Mostly they ignore one another. Illapa screeches so loud it scares Tony, so he won't even come near her. Both the bigger birds can fly, but we still keep an eye on them, because even a scratch from Tony could cause a fatal infection. However, things are pretty peaceful, except for the "singing" and screeching. :)

The bigger the bird the less likely they will be interested. The small, 'flitty' birds they will like. You just have to keep the birds in a safe space at all times. If the cats are in the room keep an eye on them, and make sure they know the birds are "off limits." But, you know your pets best, so you do what you think is best. Urd and Neo are my cats. :)

Urd is one of the three Norns, the Norse fates. (The other two are Skuld and Verdandi.) I frequently call her Petunia, because she's a round, cute little piggy.

Neo is named after (big surprise) the Matrix character, because a friend also got a black kitten right before I got him, and named her Trinity...I thought it would be cute to have them match. My friend has since gotten rid of Trinity, so I feel like a dork for having a black cat named Neo. (Thanks, Di! :eyes:) He has since earned the nicknames "Mr. Evil," "Burmese Bitey-face," and "El Monstro," because he's an evil, bitey-faced monster. I love him to death.

I also have two cockatiels: Lucille and Imhotep. Lucille was named by her original owner who thought she was a girl; we do not disabuse Lucille of that notion, and that's how she likes it. Imhotep was originally named Bob, by my niece, so I renamed him something improbable just to be perverse. (And, yes, I had recently seen The Mummy.) We call him Immy. He's very bratty and smart, and calls "Here, kitty-kitty" and purrs to try to get the attention of Urd, with whom he fell in love at first sight.

"dr j" is my labrador retriever who always was jumping a ways up and down as a pup.. like the real dr j.

"abba" was named because it was a cool name from a list of names i saw at the breeder for hungarian kuvasz, the purchase contract requirement was that the akc registration had to be a hungarian name from the list. he was also looking at me like a wise old man when i selected him. it also rhymed with the name of my other dog, aja

same for my sweetie "Aja," she was named from a list of names for hungarian kuvasz, oddly i have had two kuvasz named Aja. the first dear girl (i miss her so damned much)i had to put down when she had a stroke and could not move her back legs. the next year i was contacted by the kuvasz rescue group and offered a 9 month old female, the family had, by amazing chance named her Aja.

"little bit" was a 2 pound dog i rescued, she was so small that each other dog i owned had a head bigger than "little bit".. she is now a massive 7 pounds

she is a sweet, smart, wonderful dog ... she loves to play but she is not at all either hyper or noisy ... she's a good watchdog and will bark when someone approaches the house but otherwise she's very quiet ...

prior to my current welsh terrier, i owned a foxterrier ... now that was one super-hyper crazy dog ... foxterriers often don't get along well with other dogs ... that can be a real problem ... my welsh terrier couldn't be more easy-going ... she love everyone and everything ... well accept for the obviously inferior species ... you know, cats ...

We have Akira, Tetsuo, Michiko, Kuma, Kiyoshi, and Yoko. Our cat is named Olive because she looks like a big old black olive. Our bearded dragon Tinkerbell was "Belle" when we got him. The previous owners thought he was a girl. Yuri is a Russian blue rat, and Raoul is a hairless rat. And Farouk the jird just looked like a Farouk.

That we adopted from a rescue place as a puppy. Not sure exactly where Prince ame from, but we thought it was better than "smelly" which is what my son (who was 5 at the time) wanted to call him.

A Mountain Horned Dragon named Norbert, because what else would a 10 yr old and 12 yr old who are in to Harry Potter name a "dragon?"

A Leopard Spotted Gecko named Gabby. She was named after a little girl my son had a crush on at the time.

Bobby is an Amazon parrot and is most likely a boy since he is 8 and no eggs yet. However, Bobby works well in female just in case! Spectacular coloring and plumage. Well mannered and will not climb arms!

Lucky is a golden retriever puppy female. She is immensely beautiful with a dark red coat. We got lucky to recuse such a dog. She wears me out in no time!

Bello is a rag doll cat rescued from the folks at PETA. Immensely beautiful with very dark blue eyes and loves baths! Loves to see people coming in the house.

Mystery is a beta male fish. Name stolen from a Spongebob episode.

Sugar is Mystery's rival. Appeared to be sweet and docile, yet snails do not thrive in the land of Sugar or even Goldie.

Goldie is a female beta. Sugar let her be for three days and I thought all was well. However a tail fin was bitten and she has her own tank now.

I think she's about six years old now.

We originally got them for the eggs - which are really good, by the way. Brownie has always been the least productive though - she only lays for a few months a year. She's real sweet, and has lots of different things to say in her little chicken language. She and the dog roam the yard together with no problems, but we keep the cats away when she's out.

Lazzie = About 55 pounds. Looks like a minature Irish Wolf Hound. Her name came from a song by the band HUM called Lady Lazarus.

121. Buddy -- we got him from the shelter and they have a way of

raising funds that allows someone to name a dog or cat after a pet. Someone donated money and wanted a dog named after their deceased dog, Buddy. There is no way I was going to change that name.

Besides, it really fits him.

122. Well, we found three kittens about 12 years ago and

originally I was only going to keep one of them. At the time he had the most beautiful blue eyes (I didn't know they changed color later) so I named him Frank (Ole Blue Eyes). Then when I decided to keep his twin I wanted a name to go with Frank. I noticed the little guy had a funny kidney-bean shaped body and he was therefore named Beans.

My vet laughed every time I came in with Frank & Beans. Said it made him hungry!

In the horse category we have:
Darmane - she came with that name. It is a combination of the sire
and dam's names. I hate it.

Heart That's True - yearling filly. No speacial reason. I just like
the name.

Monastic - weanling colt. Sire's name is Real Quiet. I figured a
monastary is about as quiet as you can get.

Rosa Vanozza- five year old mare. Named for Rosa Vanozza, the mistress
of Pope Alexander IV. She had four kids by the pope and had her portrait painted over the bedroom door with herself depicted as the
virgin Mary. She stole tons of money from the church, but after the
pope died she plowed all the money back into the community for schools
and things to help the people. WHen she died she was such a beloved
figure that she had two hundred years worth of masses said in her
honor. I thought it would be a good name for a fiesty filly but
Rosa turned out to be a real slut like her namesake who wanted only
to have kids. She is now in foal to a nice young stallion.

Cat - Aretha Franklin. When she talks she can really wail like the
Diva.

I read about Rosa Vanozza is this great book called "Uppity
Women of Medieval Times", by Vicki Leon.

It is a wonderful book, filled with great stories of women who
refused to accept the sexual mores of their times. I had another
filly named Chiyome. It was another hilarious story from the same
book.

Chiyome was a Japanese widow who, when her husband died and left
her without an income, began collecting the orphan girls from the
streets of her town. She turned them into trained assassins and
hired them out to the government to kill it's enemies. She taught
them karate, taught them to escape any form of bondage and to kill
without leaving any trace. The toughest part of their life was
trying to escape the bondage of Madame Chiyome.
