The Magistrate appreciation thread.
As someone who has had a drink or two with this man, here's my opinion:

He is one of the most intelligent, articulate, logical, reasonable, jovial and just plain fascinating people I have ever had the pleasure of getting wobbly with, and I eagerly await the next opportunity. I feel incredibly fortunate to have met him.

So there.

I still read, but lately I just haven't had much to say.

Recently I am fortunate enough to be working during working hours. And during evening hours either His Modship's on the machine, or I am trying to forget how lucky I am to be working by playing silly games.

I have, however, seen him show remarkable restraint. His intellect would be lethal in the wrong hands.

90. with apologies to Mr. Expat
It's a poem called "Stages" from Hermann Hesse's The Glass Bead Game, sometimes translated as Magister Ludi (a pun on Latin for "schoolmaster" and "master of the game", similar etymology to our Magistratus). I'm not sure how well the rhyming couplets survive the German-to-English translation, but here's the complete poem:

"As every flower fades and as all youth
Departs, so life at every stage,
So every virtue, so our grasp of truth,
Blooms in its day and may not last forever.
Since life may summon us at every age
Be ready, heart, for parting, new endeavor,
Be ready bravely and without remorse
To find new light that old ties cannot give.
In all beginnings dwells a magic force
For guarding us and helping us to live.
Serenely let us move to distant places
And let no sentiments of home detain us.
The Cosmic Spirit seeks not to restrain us
But lifts us stage by stage to wider spaces.
If we accept a home of our own making,
Familiar habit makes for indolence.
We must prepare for parting and leave-taking
Or else remain the slaves of permanence.
Even the hour of our death may send
Us speeding on to fresh and newer spaces,
And life may summon us to newer races.
So be it, heart: bid farewell without end."

64. I so admire the man, and can only hope that someday I'll say something
that is worthy of a response by him. :loveya:

But wait, he's a Mod, isn't he? Let me amend this to say that I hope I get a response that isn't deleting or locking my post! ;)

67. If you want to know what The Magistrate looks like,
Look up "class" in the dictionary. There's his picture, Sir.

75. The first day I met him, he made me cry.
Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 12:18 AM by southlandshari
My first day as a new mod and I ventured a post on some issue in the mod forum, and he replied very formally, with "Ma'am" at the end of his post. I thought, "Well shit, Shari, you've pissed off some long-time moderator on your very first day. Way to go!"

I teared up and logged off for the rest of the night.

Silly me. I quickly learned that The Magistrate has the same formal, but always open and engaging, style of speaking with everyone here. And once I got past my ridiculous first reaction, I learned an incredible amount from him about objectivity, civility and about using a thoughtful and open-minded approach to our work here.

He is one of a kind, and I am better for having known him. He is a good friend and a good person.

Cheers to you, Sir!

80. That Remains A Matter Of Some Distress To Me, Ma'am
The habit originated in up-bringing, but had usefulness in my adventurous youth: when a policeman tells two fellows to move along, and one says, "Fuck you, pig!" while the other says, "Yes, Sir," it is pretty easy to predict which will be spending the night where....

81. Do not trouble yourself, Sir.
I daresay if your response to me that day had been "Fuck you, pig!" my reaction would have been far more pronounced than a couple of tears and worrying about offending other mods!

;-)

78. I concur, Ma'am
The Magistrate may approve fondly of my semi-coherent attempt to pay my sincere respects through imitation of his crisp and articulate means of expression.

85. Hear, hear!
I don't think we agree on every issue, but I know this place would be the lesser without his learned wisdom and magnificent application of the sentence. His pen is liscensed lethal weapon...beware.

I hope I get the opportunity to toast a few with him one day aswell.

IMHO, one of the most intelligent and articulate DUers of all time, with a wealth of knowledge at his disposal that totally boggles the mind. I can't think of anyone on this board who can touch him. And I'm honored to call him my friend.:applause:
