My ear hurts and the ENT doctor can't find anything wrong.

The first ENT doc found a cyst on the X-rays so he arranged for a CAT scan and me to be sent to an ENT surgeon. The latest ENT doctor poked a camera up my nose, caused an INCREDIBLE amount of pain and declared he couldn't see anything wrong.

He says "if the pain continues" I should see a neurologist. The pain's so fscking bad now I took two days off work last week - what more does he want?

He didn't seem the slightest bit interested as to where the pain was, or listening to symptoms or problems. Frankly, I think he took a dislike to me on first sight and decided it was "all in my head" (pun not intended).

I did notice one thing. The waiting room magazines were all right-wing especially the Philidelphia Church of God Trumpet (http://www.thetrumpet.com/) and I had a same-sex partner listed as next of kin.

1. It might be jaw related

check w/ your dentist to see if you're grinding your teeth, or if you have a weird alignment with your teeth.

2. Do you use an earbud with your cell phone?

If so, try switching the ear every so often.

Seriously - I had ear pains and tht was the cause of mine...also make sure you clean out the fuzzy pad on the ear bud often

3. Could be teeth related

I had pain in my ear and my doctor figured out it was referred pain. I had a wisdom tooth removed and the pain went away.

6. Warm salt water

Mix a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and rinse your mouth with it. If there's any chance that the pain is referred pain from a dental problem, rinsing with salt water might help a little, temporarily, until you can get to a dentist.

7. Not trying to diagnose, but i had 2-3 days of the most intense ear pain...

I ever experienced in January before developing Bells Palsy. It wouldn't be a bad idea to see a neurologist. :shrug:

10. No advice to offer, just a sympathetic ear (no pun intended)

I've had a couple of doctors who made me feel like they suspected me of being a hypochondriac. It's infuriating. They have such a manner of superiority and absolutely no compassion. They make you feel like you're wasting their valuable time.

Don't let his shitty attitude deter you. It's YOUR body and you know what you feel. Maybe seeing a neurologist is the way to go at this point. Good luck. :hug:

11. Ever since I've had sinus surgery 5 years ago

I've had ear pain & the feeling of fluid in my ears, but no one can find anything in there either. I still have sinus infections that supposedly couldy be irritating nerves in my ear though. It's frustrating being told that there is nothing wrong when there is so clearly the sensation of something wrong! Do you have sinus trouble in general? Have you tried a 2nd opinion?

13. No diagnosis, but a temporary relief measure. Use your hair dryer on

warm to hot setting and blow it in your ear. The heat will give you temporary relief.

Those who suggest that your ear pain may be related to your teeth are spot on. If you have an abscessed tooth in the area, or TMJ, ear pain is not unusal. And it can be excruciating In that case, the blow drier trick won't help.

Find another ENT.

14. Possibly could be TMJ. That causes headaches, ear problems,

mouth problems. See a different doc. One that will listen to you.
