All you have to do is click the icon, and that person disappears from your life here on DU forever. The problem goes away without further flaming or bad blood. Plonking is a wonderful thing.

It's all very relative. There are people on this thread who I have considered as*holes before, and there are definitely people on this thread who have considered me an as*hole. People act differently on different days depending on their mood. That's life.

What many here don't understand is that just because you agree with someone politically does not mean that you can automatically get along with that person. What's even more ridiculous is many here don't understand that just because they think someone is an as*hole or someone disagrees with them, that automatically makes that person a conservative or "freeper", regardless of what political stances that person has taken on other threads.

There are a lot of wonderful people here, but there are also a lot of inflated egos. But even those people usually have their hearts in the right place.

...and click on the little sleeping figure icon in the upper middle-left side of the post header. That will "plonk" the poster, adding him/her to your ignore list.

(The term "plonk" comes from USENET, where people had to create their own "killfile" programs that acted somewhat the same way as DU's ignore feature. When you drop someone to the bottom of your "killfile" list, it's like you're dropping a stone into a well - hence the "plonk" sound.)

All posts made by that poster will not be displayed to you. You have the option to remove that person from your ignore list in the future if you so choose.

Unfortunately, it also means that that poster can post anything that he or she wants about you and unless another poster alerts you to it, you won't know what's going on. Fortunately, here at DU there is an excellent team of Mods that will remove any inflammatory or degrading posts.

I like animals for that reason. I can't talk about politics with anyone in any specific way or I will get into a nasty argument in real life. The most I can do with my drunk republican neighbor is make oblique references about being depressed about this bad news in London, etc.

Politics are VERY difficult subjects to discuss respectfully. Its a great skill to develope and anyway, I think I've become LESS of and asshole because there are rules and consequenses of being an asshole.

Now, interfering with Andy Stephenson's operation was way beyond asshole, I assume this thread is about sniping amoung Democrats on this or that issue. That is really an important conversation and its hard not to be passionate about it. Passion isn't being an asshole, nesasarily

One of my neighbors is a disabled Vietnam vet with a huge chip on his shoulder for anyone that disagrees with him or is of a different race, religion, or sexuality. Also, most of my family members are Republicans.

I try to be as respectful as I can, but most of the time it's just better to strike a dumb pose, like "I'm too busy watching MTV, dude, to know what you're talking about." That works with the neighbors, but not with my family.

They weren't assholes toward me, even, they were just being assholes. What's worse is that in one case, the person being an asshole was in the wrong but continued to try to pick a fight with another poster. It's easy for some people to be tough guys by proxy, I guess--they might behave differently if they weren't protected by the fact that the person they're insulting isn't standing right in front of them.

Are the people I put on "Ignore" like that all the time, even away from their online lives? :shrug: I dunno, but for the sake of the people around them I certainly hope not.
