"Thank you for your service".....is it trite?
Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 02:34 AM by RummyTheDummy
Whenever I meet people in the military I just can't bring myself to say it. I think it sounds hokey and insincere and it makes my skin crawl when other people say it.

I was on a cruise last year and on the formal night there was a guy sitting at the bar in Army dress uniform. I had a drink sent over and just kind of motioned and left him alone.I didn't want to bug the guy. I figure they hear this tired line enough.

1. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing
but why don't people say that to police officers, firefighters, doctors, teachers or postal workers? Those people all serve their country too.

2. "I want you to know that I appreciate what you do."
Same sentiment, less hokey.

3. When people say it to me, typically yes
Because I really don't know what to say. I had reasons beyond just serving my country when I signed up, and my typical internal reaction to that statement is "If you think it's so great to do, why aren't you signed up yet". But then, I'm an acknowledged ornery old cuss.

I guess it depends on the delivery. Some people mean it, others appear to be saying it to make themselves feel better.
