My letter to CompUSA

Type of Concern: Compliments

Have you spoken to a Manager in the Store? No

------------------------ Details ------------------------
I'd like to thank CompUSA for doing such a fine job as a
product showroom. The area is clean and tidy, and the
shelves are typically well organized. When I walk into my
local CompUSA I know that I can browse the aisles of
goods for the things I'm looking for with absolutely no
interruption whatsoever. I know that I can walk past
people in red shirts that I'm assuming are your shelves
and display technicians without being pestered about how
my day is going, or whether I need help finding what I'm
looking for.

This works out great for me, because your prices stink,
but mostly because your return policies are borderline
criminal. Sometimes it's nice to get a feel of a
computer case before you order, or a popular
mouse/keyboard combination. CompUSA generously gives me
the opportunity to get some personal hands-on experience
with these sorts of things before I go home and order
them from newegg.com.

I imagine this note would be much more useful to you if I
told you which store I can walk in and out of without a
single acknowledgement, but why would I want to change
this lovely arrangement you and I have?

All the best,
Martin

2. I hate hate hate the way they..
put prices on the shelves and they either subtract a mail in rebate, so it looks like it's cheaper than it is.. or the other problem I had was an item is in the wrong place, so once again.. it looked like the item was cheaper than it is.

yes.. I avoid them.

8. LMAO
Nice. I also love how they have "online" rebates that aren't valid if you buy the same damn thing in the store.

11. Service sucks too.
A few years back, I had a hard drive totally crash mechanically. It was under warranty, and they had to wait 30 days for a replacement part from the manufacturer.

I got it hame, it worked for about a month and the hard drive took a dive again. Another 30 day wait. Even though they had the same model on the shelf.

Thanks CompUSA for giving me the incentive to learn how to build and repair my own computers.

14. Trust me, you are better of NOT getting help from a CompUSA emlpoyee.
They generally don't know shit about what they are selling, and base their recommendation on the code on the sticker (which tells them their comission %). If you are in a CompUSA and you are completely confused, approach the nearest 15-18 year old male that actually looks interested in the merchandise and ask him his opinion. Odds are he has one. I've actually made money just shopping there by acting as an impromtu "agent" for people buying computers.

That being said, CompUSA is little more than a games warehouse and a demo showroom for me, as well.

17. They have sucked for so long now it's not even funny...
I can remember when they first came to my area, along with Computer City (Tandy) stores...there was real competition and price shopping between the two actually paid off.

Once they bought out the Computer City stores, it was MSRP all the time, with "sales" that are nothing but rebates, and idiots for staff.

I knew it was going downhill when several years ago I walked in for a box of disks and saw a former co-worker in the repair dept. That guy I knew was an absolute moron when it came to computers, and if he's helping customers with their problems, it's a sad state of affairs.

What's worse, my (now) former employer only wanted me to use Compusa for any hardware purchases, so I had to deal with the "business sales" dept. I had no less than 9 different account reps. in 1 year...every time I called to order something I was informed that "...doesn't work here anymore, your new rep. is...". Fine. Forget reps, I'll just drive over and pick it off the shelves myself.

Bad idea. The business sales counter is staffed usually by one trainee who cannot even operate the POS (and I don't mean point of sale) system, and who has to call in a supervisor to ring up any item. So to save my 10% (or less...no discount on software or "hot items"), I have to subject myself to an even longer wait than a normal walk in customer. They totally lost me when the guy who headed business sales quit in disgust. He was a very nice guy, extremely knowldgeable and really tried to help the customer. He was just crippled by a system that reeked. Haven't been back since.

On a more pleasant note...Nice letter! :)
