Boy, 10, dies while apparently playing 'passing out game'
BOISE, Idaho - A 10-year-old boy was found dead, hanging from a tree, apparently killed while trying to get high by playing the "pass-out game," authorities said.

Dalton Eby may be the second Idaho child killed in recent months while playing a choking game, trying to cut off the oxygen supply to the brain to achieve a type of "high."

Dalton's mother reported him missing last Thursday when he failed to return home after visiting a friend. Search and rescue crews found his body Friday, in a tree near his Island Park home, the Fremont County sheriff's office said in a statement.

There was nothing at the scene suggesting that anyone else was involved, the sheriff's office said.

"During the course of the investigation it was learned that there is a game that is common knowledge to many of our youth. A game known as the 'pass-out game,' the 'fainting game,' the 'tingling game,' or the 'something dreaming game' - to name a few," the statement added.

1. Dayum.
When we were kids we did a variation on this all the time - one person would bend over, head down and hyperventilate for 15-20 seconds, then stand up, arms crossed over chest, while taking a deep breath and holding it. Someone else would grab them from behind, wrapping their arms around and squeezing and lifting. Boom! Unconscious!

That was crazy enough - but hanging yourself? While alone? :scared:

3. That is what we did too.
To this day I still remember a portion of the vision I had while passed out. I only did that once.

5. We used to do that one too
The other one that was fun was to stand in the middle of the pool (3 feet) and turn around as fast as you could. Everything starts to move really fast and then you dive under. It was hard to find the top..lol.

8. Anyone else try
the empty 2-liter trick ? After you'd poured all the soda out, my brothers or I would suck the air out of the bottle, then immediately re-inflate it. Gave a quick little rush that was gone in no-time. We found out about it on accident.

7. We did the same thing.
I did it all the time until I discovered pot. But I never would have dreamed of hanging myself.

2. I've heard of this happening to adults in a sexual context
(typically referred to as auto-erotic asphyxiation) but never to someone so young.

Very disturbing shit.

Edited to add link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Milligan

Auto-erotic asphyxiation while cross-dressed.

6. We did a variation of this, but never with hanging.
I still remember when they dropped one of the kids they had "passed out" and he smoked his head on the concrete. I never did it. Especially after seeing that.

11. I got a concussion from playing that game in the 8th grade...
Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 05:08 PM by fleabert
we would hang our heads down while standing, breathe really fast for a few minutes, then whip our heads up and a friend would basically strangle us for a minute or so, while we also held our breath. I passed out, fell on the tile entry floor, my head bounced twice, had convulsions, and then got up (still sort of unconscious) and walked around the room holding my head and drooling. when I woke up, I was on the other side of the room and sick to my stomach and had the worst headache.

I was spending the night with a friend and her dad freaked out when he saw me, took me right home, I threw up a bunch and my grandma wouldn't let me sleep. I don't know why she didn't take me right away, but we went to the dr. in the morning. it was a rough night.

we never played that game again. I scared the shit out of my friends while I was having convulsions...they were all crying after (boys too)

12. Shit!
Now I'm really thanking the goddess that we did it the way we did - arms around the person hyperventilating for the sqqqquueeeeeeeeeze into unconsciousness. We'd hold the person passing out, and gently lower them to the floor as soon as they were out.

I heard I had convulsions once too - I woke up and everyone was practically peeing themselves laughing. I was like - WTF? Apparently I did some very entertaining twitching.

14. we weren't very smart, I was the second person to do it, the first went
much more smoothly, or obviously, I wouldn't have done it either! I had a person who was supposed to catch me too, but they didn't and I slid right down, my convulsions were more like a violent seizure, frothing and everything. No one was laughing! One girl had her hand on the phone to call 911 when I stood up...so they thought I must be okay, since I 'woke up'. I remember nothing except being bent over and breathing hard, then standing up, the next thing I knew, I was on the other side of the room babbling and drooling and had a headache.

scary shit we kids do, I firmly believe most of us are lucky to be alive sometimes!

13. I say people do this sort of thing in HS.
They figured out that cutting off oxygen to the game will knock yuo out. People would put a "sleeper hold" on each other.

I also see that it was a red stater too, so I guess this should kill off David Brooks philosophical bullshit.

17. Now that's something I never heard of
Yes, when I was young I would spin around until I got dizzy but it never involved hyperventilating, holding my breath or hanging. I've heard of auto-erotic asphyxiation but until this article I never heard of kids doing this without a sexual content. Scary.:scared:
