Suggest for me some intelligent pop music
Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 09:47 PM by ALago1
I have a soft spot for soaring melodies and catchy hooks.

Here's a sampling of the type of such music I like. Keep in mind that I don't consider most of the stuff in the top 40 true pop music. To my ears, it's bland, derivative, and poorly produced. I'd like to discover some new artists in this vein:

Beatles
Brian Wilson
Barenaked Ladies
Apples in Stereo
Rufus Wainwright
Matthew Sweet
Talking Heads
Weezer
The Pixies
The Wondermints
etc. etc.

Any suggestions complete with quintessential albums will be greatly appreciated! :)

82. You're My New Best Friend!
I've been a Fixxophile since the first album (Shuttered Rooms) I also had the EP that predated it, but after i had SR.

I think Reach The Beach (1983) is one of the five best albums of the entire 80's.

Those guys were utterly superb. Great groove, intelligent and metaphoric lyrics, great individual playing, and tight as tight can be.

I saw them live twice. Once in a very small room. (The Vic in Chicago.) OUTSTANDING.

10. Hey There
I'm a fan of both of these two suggestions, but never really considered them to be "pop". I guess I'd lump them more into the rock type category.

Then again, I don't like splitting things off into genres that much...

Double live album... SO much better than Stop Making Sense, IMHO. It was unavailable forever, then snuck out a year or so back. Track it down. It's essentially TWO concerts, one from their early 4-piece days, and one from their Remain In Light large band days.

Outstanding!

41. oooohohhhh ...
... I see you've added a few bands.

Now you are getting down right adventurous.

Of course, the king, champion, professor of pop music is a little-know n Englishman by the name of Brian Peter George St. Jean le Baptiste de la Salle Eno, generally referred to as Brian Eno, who has created some of the most intelligent, original and interesting pop music ever. Talking Heads 3 best albums (More songs..., Fear of Music, Remain in Light) were in collaboration with him.

Now, he's done some "ambient" stuff that is pretty out there. But he's also done a lot of really great records. He has a new CD out that I really love, it's kind of downbeat but it is a commentary on the times and musically very anti-boring. It's called "Another Day on Earth".

Eno writes commentaries on politics and such now and then, he used to be a close friend of Tony Blair's but then they don't get on any more.

Anyway, maybe you could download it and if you like it (ADoE, give it at least 3 listens before you decide) then buy it. That's what I do. :)

44. As a unabashed Enophile...
... let me suggest these recordings:

Another Green World (1975) - simply fantastic recording that is seriously a key lynchpin to everything interesting in pop music that followed.

Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy (1975) - a quirky, quixotic effort that is also full of songs that are at once crazy and engaging.

Apollo (1983) - a completely "ambient" recording (no lyrics) replete with moods and atmospheres not of this earth.

All of these require more than one listen. Really good music sometimes takes time to absorb. In any event, Eno has certainly created some mediocre work in his time, but when he hits a home run, it is out of the park by a mile :)

then you totally need to check out the Polyphonic Spree. 24 piece orchestral pop goodness. How many rock and roll bands do you know with an 8 piece choir, a french horn, a flute, and a theremin. as well as the guitars and so on!

55. The BOO RADLEYS (and other Britpop)
I'm a huge fan of Britrock, where I generally find a greater emphasis on melody.

One FANTASTIC band that is completely unknown in the US is a mid-90s British Indie-rock group called The Boo Radleys. Their two masterpieces are the albums Giant Steps and Wake Up! Check them out at allmusic.com, and if you have iTunes, switch your settings to the British store, and you can sample those two albums (although you won't be able to purchase them). They have gorgeous melodies, blend of the Beatles, The Beach Boys, plus a heavy dose of shoegazing elements and even some reggae touches (at least on Giant Steps). They have a new best-of compilation coming out next week, which I have on order called "Find the Way Out"

Other great Britrock acts include Blur - great group, extremely ecletic. I enjoy every one of their albums exc. for their debut - Modern Life is Rubbish (1993), Parklife (1994), Great Escape (1995), Blur (1997), 13 (1999) is okay, and I LOVE their 2003 album Think Tank.

The Stone Roses are great. Kind of spacey, vaguely danceable, kind of atmospheric way.

As for Oasis - haha, shouldn't bring up Oasis in the DU Lounge - but (What's the Story) Morning Glory? is a fantastic pop album, so is their b-sides compilation The Masterplan. Their debut is excellent but far more rocking - more punkish, very garage-sounding, so I don't know how you'd feel about that. Their newest album is actually very good - Don't Believe the Truth - although it's not as "sing-a-long" as their older albums.

Check out Teenage Fanclub, heavily influenced by American groups like Big Star. Really great stuff.

Another great British group is Idlewild. Their newer albums are a little like Coldplay's but in my opinion, better (and I DO like Coldplay).

Oh, and check out Suede and The Tears - Suede was a rock group of the early '90s, very theatrical, vaguely gay-themed (although none of the members were actually gay) - both Suede and Dog Man Star are great albums. The Tears is a reunion group of sorts - the original head pair - Brett Anderson and Bernard Butler have gotten back together and produced a fantastic collection of melancholy pop tunes.

Check out all these groups at allmusic.com

Do you like Bowie? Lots of great Bowie stuff.

Oddly enough, I have heard of the Boo Radleys but never actually "heard" the Boo Radleys. Now I'm interested.

Blur is of course awesome and I really do like Oasis as well. Same goes for Bowie.

Teenage Fanclub I've also heard of but never listened to.

This list was invaluable. Thanks again!

104. Yup - oh, and SUPERGRASS and THE VERVE
How could I forget those two? Two of my favorites. Supergrass is fantastic, they're a little punk, one of the most fun, most enjoyable pop-rock groups in the world and their hundreds... NO, MILLIONS times better than any of the pop-punk crap we get on American radio.

And The Verve are great. Their first record is a great shoegazing record, their second a mix of beautiful (though devastating and emotional) ballds and long, spacey jams. Their third album (their most popular) with Bitterwsweet Symphony is called Urban Hymns and is a more traditional atmospheric orch-pop album, but it's great - lyrically, musically.

Oh, and one that I haven't checked out but plan to - a Swedish group called the Shout Out Louds (or is just "Shout Out Loud"?) - anyway, I sampled some of their stuff and they sounded great as well - very much in the indie/pop category, but I plan to check it out and based on what it sounded like, you'd probably like it a lot too.

Definitely use allmusic.com - one of the best resources ever. Their reviews are great, balanced, and informative, and I've discovered so many of my favorite bands off that site.

58. Anything by the Chameleons or Comsat Angels
Both are intelligent, underrated guitar pop bands who were a big influence on many of the early 90s "shoegaze" bands (like Ride, Slowdive, Catherine Wheel, etc.).

The Chameleons "Strange Times" (1987) is one of the lost guitar pop masterpieces of the 1980s, and still sounds as fresh and immediate as it did nearly 20 years ago.

You may also want to check out The House Of Love and the Chills, too, for finely-crafted guitar pop. Highly recommended! :hi:

66. Charlie Robinson
great fusion of country pop and other genres

My name is John O'Reilly
And my father worked the fields
In the hills of old Kilarny
Where I helped him turn the wheels
My arms grew hard as iron for a boy of 17
And I used my fists for gambling in those wet Kilarny streets

Well the ship left for America and I brought my pack aboard
Said goodbye to my dear Ireland said a prayer to my dear Lord
I fought those sorry guineas in the kitchen they called hell
I fought them for their dollar and those guineas paid me well

Chorus
Fair thee well fair Dover
Fair thee well your seasons turn
For my pockets will be jingling on the day of my return
The day of my return

I fought in New York City and I fought the Jersey shore
My gut stayed full of whiskey and my bed stayed full of whores
They called my right a cannonball and my left they called the same
I left em' all lyin' half in blood and half in shame

I met a man on '32 and he stuck out his hand
And he offered me a thousand if I'd fall before his man
I said it could be done but only for another two
He smiled at me and nodded as I stuck it in my shoe

Chorus
Fair thee well fair Dover
Fair thee well your seasons turn
For my pockets will be jingling on the day of my return
The day of my return

They rang the bell two times before I let him have my nose
And I let him work my left until my eye was swollen closed
Then I let loose a right that they still talk about today
For that guinea didn't know that I had bet the other way

They covered every dock and every port there on the coast
Looking for that double crosser who had turned into a ghost
But I was on a train my friend that rode the other way
And i'll sail from California back to Dublin one fine day

Chorus
Fair thee well fair Dover
Fair thee well your seasons turn
For my pockets will be jingling on the day of my return
The day of my return

71. Rock aint intellectual, its sexual.
Read a good book, then go mindlessly rock out.

Combining the too ruins both, for me.

The bar for being an "intellectual" pop artist is sooooooo low that its pathetic anyway. You get crap like Rush and John Lennon being adulated for their pathetic attempts at being "intellectual."

I think popular music can be intellectual. Lennon was a genius and brought a lot of social consciousness to people through his music

And what about Dylan? You wouldn't dismiss his work as a "pathetic attempt" at being intellectual, would you? I think he's a real deal genius...

89. Dylan was a musical genius.
Music can and should be intelligent. But it gets awful ponderous when it gets intellectual.

Lennon never said anything above freshman intro to philosophy level in his life. His songs are almost universally dirges with melodies on the level of nursery rhymes and football chants (except Imagine, don't know where that came from). For the life of me, his "genius" completely eludes me. He was intelligent and aware, very free in his thinking, and very spiritual (what a great advance that he stopped beating women, great topic to celebrate in song), and that made his music better, but a genius? Only when compared to run of the mill bonehead rockstars maybe, but not compared to real intellectuals.

91. Well, when I think of the term genius...
...I don't necessarily think of someone who produced some grand piece of work that will be revered forever. Instead, I would classify geniuses as those who alter the course of a certain artform/skill/craft positively for future generations.

So, while I can respect (although don't totally agree with) your opinion that Lennon didn't necessarily produce something that will stand the test of time as a great work in and of itself, he did change the course of things to a great extent, positively as well. That earns him the label genius in my book.

95. Paul equally deserves the genius term imo
From what I've read, John was fairly absent during the Beatles' most creative period (i.e. Sgt. Pepper). That was mainly Paul's baby, but John did contribute some gems.

However, never could get into a lot of Paul's solo work (especially during the Wings era). Would still love to see him perform live though.

That would be great news and should be shared with the world.

I will remain convinced that great rock (not necessarily pop)is principally a Dionysian endeavor, both to create and to appreciate. As is great sex.

As the great philosopher Mojo Nixon once sang: "don't be afraid of fun, loosen up your ponytail, be wild, young, free and dumb, get your head outta your tail, Don Henly must die."

it's not chirpy pop. Her lyrics are decidedly melancholy, but smart nonetheless.

She has a way of saying what she has to say in a way that's never been said before, but when you hear it, you know it should have been said that way all along.

And she has her own independent label, so when you buy her stuff, you're not supporting music industry establishment that refuses to release anything that isn't "marketable".

112. A few other random ..
.... works of art!

Portishead - "Dummy". No way to even describe this. Sampler based music with achingly beautiful vocals about love and longing and darkness. Trip-hop.

Sublime - "Sublime". Their last and best record. Punk/reggea/ska/kitchen-sink

The Wolfgang Press - "Queer" English band mixes motown influnenced music, cynical 90s lyrics and comes up with an original masterpiece.

Brian Eno & David Byrne - "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" found sound "vocals" with African rhythms and percussion.

Boards of Canada - "Geogaddi" - Sampler-based pseudo-ambient from Scottish duo. Or really anything by these two.

Goldie - "Timeless" - first and best album from Goldie, drum&bass style with some soulful vocals and crunching beats.

Cocteau Twins - anything before 1992 - you'll either love them or hate them. I love them :)

117. BTW

Great topic - I've found some artists for me to look up, too. Even though from my list I MIGHT like more expansive pop than you do, I'm glad you recognize there is pop for all tastes. :hi:

118. Thanks!
I'm very surprised and thrilled as to how this thread took off. I'm going to be sure and bookmark it for future reference in my musical explorations.

Just curious, what do you mean by "expansive" pop?

119. By that I meant..
I might like some more of the current radio-friendly pop. That's all.

121. Ah I see
Well Green Day & Coldplay (as you had mentioned above) are a-ok in my book.

I actually owe Green Day an apology. When they first hit it big I wrote them off as a flash in the pan. They showed me up, especially with their latest release (one of my favorites of 2004).

124. That's great

I'm not crazy about Celine Dion, Michael Bolton, Mariah Carey, Jessica Simpson, Hilary Duff, Britney Spears (like some songs,) Christina Aguilera, boy bands like Backstreet Boys, Ashlee Simpson, J-Lo, modern rap and hip-hop (actually all rap,) Creed, and Maroon 5 - but all 4 of the ones I mentioned IMO are making great hooks with worthwhile lyrics, even if the lyrics don't target me.

Take care. :hi:

130. Cool, LPFF! You know about her
I didn't think anyone else would. It seems that we sometimes discover the same new artists at around the same time.

I'd also like to recommend Nina Gordon and The Painkillers to the opening poster. I'm sure I forgot more, too..

129. Ry Cooder's new CD, Chavez Ravine
It's been in heavy rotation at my house for a couple months now. It's Cooder's first project under his own name since he produced the Buena Vista Social Club project and its various offshoots. Now he's back home in Los Angeles, using the chicano music of the LA barrios (past and present) to tell the story of this one time neighborhood, Chavez Ravine, that was bulldozed in the 1950s as an urban renewal project, but ultimately the project fell apart and the land was signed over to the Brooklyn Dodgers, who were moving the franchise to LA, to build their new stadium.

The songs tell the story, obliquely, in both English and Spanish, and some of these tunes just groove relentlessly. In a fairer world, the tune called "Muy Fifi" would be a top 40 hit, it just kicks ass. There's a lot of nostalgia in it too; there's a tune called "Third Base, Dodger Stadium," based on the premise that the people that used to live in Chavez Ravine remember exactly where they lived and can point out their former homesteads on the diamond-- and the character singing this song now has the job of parking attendant at the ballpark, so he's grateful he's got a good job, but still...

Anyway, it's far and away my favorite record of the year so far.

135. How about Jonathan Richman?
I recently discovered him, and I am in that "wild crush" phase with his music, as described by the Replacements in "Alex Chilton."

He records songs in spanish, french, and italian, and he sounds better in those lnaguages, in english his phrasing is wierd (as when he sang the narration in "Something About Mary")as well as english, but its all fun.

136. If you were looking for good lyrics, I would not overlook Green Day or
the Black Crowes, "Southern Harmony & Musical Company" ("~The scars I hide are now your business~" from Hotel Illness) and Shake Your Money Maker ("~And the cross from someone she has not met, Not yet~" from She Talks To Angels)....really great lyrics lurking around, especially in the Southern Harmony album.

For some of the best though, John Cougar (so as not to totally date myself, insert Mellencamp in place of Cougar)....The American Poet. Go all the way back to "Nothing Matters and What If It Did" and just go from there..."Mr. Happy Go Lucky" is fantastic...the lyrics are just right there IMO.
