I bought a new Frigidaire 18,500 window unit at Lowes tonight. The guy who loaded the ac in to my trunk--yes, I had only my car with me--sat the box up end way and tied it off.

When I got back to my cabin, my father helped me unload it, and he said that whoever loaded it screwed up, because all of the oil probably drained out of the compressor, or at least it used to be that way with old window units.

So, anyone who knows, is this true? Should I take it back, in the truck, and exchange it for another unit? I certainly don't want to go through the hell of installing a window unit that was screwed up because the guy loaded the thing wrong into my trunk.

1. Just put it right side up and let it sit over night.

That's what I did. It's on the front porch, right side up. I think my dad was pissed that I went appliance shopping without his input and was trying to make me regret my purchase. :)

3. Look at the outside of the box.

If it is mandatory that you cannot stand the unit on end, it will have a warning in BIG BLACK BLOCK LETTERS that state MUST KEEP THIS ARROW UP, or tHIS END UP ONLY!

If there is no warning, it's probably OK.

5. Window shakers have hermetically sealed compressors...

the oil is not going to leak out. Besides, you would see the oil if it did leak out. The carton would be oil soaked. I think you'll be all right. Stay cool.
