4. A marshmallow sandwich
Basically two slices of some kind of donut like sweet bread, with marshmallow in the middle, covered in chocolate...

Almost as appetizing as a deep fried snickers bar...

115. Quite possibly the most disgusting thing you will ever put in your mouth
Imagine taking a sheet of shirt cardboard, sanding it a little to rough up the surface, then sprinkling it with vanilla extract and about a pound of sugar and cutting two circles out of it. Put a big glob of marshmallow fluff between them, then apply a coat of artificial chocolate that's slightly thinner than a piece of saran wrap.

Now expect people to eat this thing.

If you want a Southern confection that's actually edible, screw the Moon Pie and go straight to Goo Goo Clusters. These are caramel, peanuts and marshmallow dipped in milk chocolate.

And don't say I'm saying that just because I haven't had your cornbread. Your cornbread sucks too.

You guys want to know what the two most blasphemous things in the world are? One is corn bread dressing. You know, for turkey. The other is those little bags of croutons you're supposed to make bread dressing out of.

First, you must have an It'sit...it's a San Francisco thing.

Basically two huge oatmeal rasin cookies, with vanilla ice cream in the middle, covered in chocolate. This beats moon pies by miles.

Then, to do it right, you have some horchata. This is rice milk with some sugar and cinamin in it. Good stuff.

The two go together in a way that moon pies and RC can only dream of...

Now if you'll pardon me, I have to walk down to the store and buy a pair of It'sIt's (One to eat there, and one to eat after I get done walking back here in this 103 degree heat).

The further north you go the sweeter it gets. In New York it's a lot like cake and my (ex)in-laws hate it. They're from Alabama and put no sugar in it - it's definately more of a bread. Yum!

Also, don't they still grow sugarcane down south?

(OT: DC gets these insane 100F/100% humidity heatwaves that last a month, nothing will give you energy then. That's why they used to shut down Congress in the summer.)

It seemed like we'd sweat gallons. As humid as it is most of it would run off you instead of cooling you. We'd drink great big glasses of sweetened tea with lunch and dinner. It sure tasted good then.
They still do sugar cane in some places in the South, though Imperial closed their plant near here.

94. More in the southeast.
Here in TX we do HAVE sweetened tea, but it's not as......much of a LAW as it is out in Alabama, Georgia and other parts out there.

I lived in GA and AL for a few years and the first time I ordered iced tea in a restaurant the waitress said "SWAYTAY?"

And I was like "HUH?"

And she sighed and said "SWAYTAY?" I wondered if she was being affectionate with me or what.

That's when I discovered they actually BREW it sweet. In TX, you usually can only find it normal and if you want it sweet, better bust out the sugar packets.

But there, it's like a religion. I laughed the first time I was in a Taco Bell in Georgia and saw TWO huge tea urns--sweet and unsweet. Guess which was one almost empty?

And BikeWriter's right, it's a HARD habit to break, lemme tell ya. And the sweeter, the better.

As you'd know, there's a lot of difference in the flavor if the sugar is dissolved in the hot tea or added after it's iced.

99. Why tea tastes sweeter when brewed with the sugar in it.
"When you put crystals of sucrose into water, they dissolve. The hotter the water, the more sucrose you can put into it before the liquid becomes saturated. By boiling a concoction of sugar and water you can put more sugar into the boiling water than at room temperature.
Once you’ve got the boiling water loaded, you add an acid (lemon juice or cream or tartar) that causes a chemical reaction that breaks crystal sucrose into two simpler sugars: fructose and glucose. Neither forms crystals. So when the water evaporates away, what’s left is non-crystalline candy."

100. The very thought of it makes my teeth curl.
I likes me some cornbread with a little honey, though.

I tend to drink green tea, which too mild to add sugar for my tastes. So maybe if you put a little sugar in it it'll be plenty sweet, since there's no bitterness to counteract.

My family has been adding a little spoon of sugar to the cornmeal batter for generations (Texas).

62. For the uninitiated, Bouncy Ball and I have just reopened
the great Cornbread Schism, which has been raging in the South since roughly 35 AD. To wit:

One side holds that there is NO sugar in cornbread at any time, under any circumstances, not even at gunpoint.

Infidels put sugar in theirs.

72. Yeah, I know...
but it will serve to demonstrate unto the Northerners how very little it takes to set us off--and how long we can cleave to our Noble Causes.

Those who wish to learn more about such behavior would do well to research the Broken Springs (Mississippi) Cornbread Feud of 1911, in which 24 members of the same family murdered and/or injured each other severely in what was described by newspapers of the era as "a rather heated disagreement."

112. Real cornbread do not have sugar!
Requires well seasoned iron skillet (mom used a Pyrex bowl that was no longer transparent it'd seen so much cornbread), and if you think it's "sour" w/o sugar, you're leaving out the teaspoon of baking soda.

The shit that Jiffy puts in boxes and calls corn muffin mix is no relative of real cornbread. :puke:

a cake would be a dessert. Corn-cake??? I think not! Mmmmmm, I have a cast iron skillet from my granny that must be 75 years old by now, and it makes the best cornbread ever. And to show how really deep my east texas roots are, has anyone ever heard of dog bread????

91. Corn bread is bread
the way I've made it here, which is with corn meal and sugar, never flour. Johnny cake is the bastardized version of corn bread made with flour.

Moonpies are ok. I've been able to get 'em here for years. But GooGoos are the best. Love the Peanut Butter ones.
