1. Because they take a good joke and stretch it out until its no longer funny
Oh wait, that's why I don't like the show. Never mind.

8. The joke stretching is the best part!
I have never laughed harder than the night, a few weeks ago, when Stewie was taunting Brian--in an increasingly high-pitched voice--about the "book" that Brian had been working on: "So, what about that novel you were writing, hmmm? Gotten anything done on that? Some characters, maybe? An intriguing setting? Some...basic conflict? Perhaps some emotional turmoil? Hmmm? Maybe, maybe, some antagonists? A little romance? Hmmm?" Not an exact quote, but along those lines, and stretched out for nearly two minutes, and not just ONCE in the show, but TWICE!

10. Perhaps your antagonist will meet someone on the way
someone interesting, maybe, make them grow a little as a human, challenge them in a different way, maybe form a bond, you know that sort of thing, in the novel you've been working on, for three years

Great sequence, I was in tears

4. Well if it's not something you like why should we convince you?
When it first ran on Fox I watched a few minutes of it and HATED it. Never set eyes on it again. Then when it came back recently I gave it another shot and I love it. It pushes the envelope 10,000,000 times more than South Park did/does only whereas South Park is an "We make fun of everyone! (but liberals more)" show Family Guy and even moreso American Dad make fun of republicans and conservatives non-stop. The jokes fly at a mile a minute and my initial problem with the show was that I almost couldn't keep up. I tended to notice the stupid jokes (of which there obviously are a few) more than the great ones. But now that I know what to expect and where it is coming from I enjoy it incredibly. I also had to get past the talking baby and talking dog thing but once I did by realizing that ITS A CARTOON, then I actually enjoyed them just as much.

But again, if it's not your bag you shouldn't force yourself to watch it.

7. I never said I didn't like it.
I've never seen it. I notice a lot of people in the Lounge like it and I wanted to know what makes it so popular.

5. It's one of the wittiest comedies on the air.
This in a time when most television sitcoms consider they're audience to be so stupid that they need artificial canned laughter in order to know when to laugh and when not to laugh.

Sure, Family Guy routinely relies on pratfalls, visual puns, and complete nonsense. Some consider this to be the lowest form of comedy. Nonsense. When done properly, as Family Guy does, it can be fantastic. In fact, Family Guy is arguably the best television comedy show to specialize in pratfalls and nonsense and obscure references since Monty Python's Flying Circus went off the air.

6. Densely-packed cultural references and a smattering of liberalness

Plus the most intelligent character is a talking dog. Who nevertheless still scoots his ass on the carpet.

9. It's going to be awhile before I can enjoy Family Guy again.
The "You have AIDS" song was OTT.

I've never been offended by a TV show before, but that song was so taseless that I just can't bring myself to watch Family Guy right now.

11. It's horrible
The first comment about it stretching out jokes until it's no longer funny is right on target. It's also so obvious. There's no subtlety like, say, the Simpsons. The funny parts aren't things that take you a moment to "get"--the best jokes are the ones that force you to work things through your head a bit until you see the humor--you either laugh instantaneously or don't laugh at all.

Last Sunday there was a joke involving Ipacac. So completely obvious, done time and time again elsewhere, an example of "brute force" gross out humor (if you're hard up for ideas just have someone fart or barf). But I laughed so hard I couldn't help myself. I KNEW what was coming, what the scene would involve, but it was still so damn funny. I think Family Guy is a stupid show with almost nothing in the way of creativity but I still watch it and it oftens makes me laugh despite myself. I am NOT a Family Guy fan but I'm glad it's there for when I want to turn of my brain and entertain my neanderthal side.
