was the traditional method of execution for British traitors; dragged on a hurdle to the gallows, half-hanged, so that they strangled slowly instead of dying with a clean snap of the neck, emasculated, disembowelled, and finally the still-beating heart ripped from the chest and held before the dying eyes...and THEN the body was decapitated and "quartered" by horses pulling ropes attached to wrists and ankles going to all 4 points of the compass, the head was put on a pike on the city gate as a warning, and the quarters of the body were buried at crossroads (because of the belief that one buried thusly would never know peace).
