Why we got rid of wall-to-wall carpeting.
Edited on Thu Jul-14-05 04:43 PM by Bouncy Ball
My husband. He drove me insane with the carpet for years. He used to drop to his hands and knees (suddenly! dramatically!), examine a "spot," SNIFF it, rub his fingers on it, sniff his fingers, look at it from a different angle, go get a paper towel, try to blot it, examine paper towel, sniff paper towel, sniff carpet again, demand to know WHAT IS THIS, get the cleaning stuff, rub at it like a bunny on speed for a good 30 or 45 minutes, cussing, muttering, sweating, like his LIFE depended on it, while I'm standing there thinking "oh no, here we go again, a lecture about stains on the carpet, isn't that the SAME ONE he freaked out over just last week?" Then he would stand up, look angrily at the spot, look angrily at us, storm off, and be mad for a few hours. IF we were lucky we didn't get twenty questions about THE SPOT. Who did it? WHAT is it? WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?

One time, he did all that and I got suspicious about this "spot" so I turned off a nearby lamp and I was right: IT WAS A SHADOW. He was rubbing like crazy with cleaning fluid at a fucking shadow.

You can see, I hope, why we got rid of wall-to-wall carpeting? When he started acting crazy about the tile we replaced it with I just said no. Acting insane over the floor is NOT ALLOWED ANYMORE and he laid off. It's just carpet that drives him bananas. We can't have it.

You live with someone for life, you gotta deal with some weirdness, I guess. I hid the mop from him.

1. WOW.
ummm, Bouncy, that's a little over-compulsive there. (I thought I was bad). Best of luck to ya. Whew. That would drive me nuts too.

2. Over the years, he has mellowed. Thank God.
Or else HE would be a spot on the floor, because I would have killed him if he didn't chill out.

I blame an inborn obsessive-compulsive tendency combined with 11 years in the Army. He's getting a lot better, though.

What's funny is our daughter sees it a lot now and I'll hear her say "No, Daddy, stop, it's no big deal, don't get all upset, see? It's gone."

clean.

Plus, it's very funny. Like Bandits.

5. Yep. Trying to remove a shadow from the carpet with Woolite
Carpet Cleaner for a good thirty minutes. He was SO pissed off at that "spot" because he thought it was a new one. The man can't handle carpet at all. We can't even have area rugs.

Got several more months to go, those suckers are expensive. :D

But we'll get there. Then he'll go crazy over a dent or a ding or a scratch in the wood floor.

12. Mine does that too!
We had a wonderful wool carpet when we moved into this house. He used some kind of awful solvent on a stain only he could see and then sprayed it with blue windex that of course turned the spot permanently blue. So, new carpet was bought and it was not as nice as the old but OK. Then he bought one of those huge carpet cleaner things even though the carpet guys said it would ruin our carpet. Yup, you can't soak a carpet with your own combo of solvents and cleaners without ruining the carpet and smelling the entire house up. Third carpet lasted about 3 weeks before he could not help himself. Now the nap is all icky but at least he quit making his own carpet cleaner. Our new house, due to begin it's life in a month or so has no carpet planned. None, I will have no more carpet. Now, what can a guy do to tile? I will let you know.

16. Got rid of all the carpeting
about 18yrs ago. No going back ever. Wood floors, wouldn't ever give them up. Kids and animals just don't mix with carpeting.

18. As a long-time apartment dweller, I hate wall-to-wall carpeting
on general principles.

They always get that icky beige color that shows every little bit of dirt, and then you either have to demand a carpet shampoo job from the landlord (who may have a polciy of doing it only every five years) or rent a carpet shampooer or hire someone to do it.

Give me good old hardwood floors any time.

20. Hate it too. Hard to get cat pee out of the carpet.
Have no money for hardwood floors, but keep on dreaming.
