And a couple weeks ago, out of the blue he said "I think George Bush is a good President." Me- "Oh yeah? Lol. Why is *that*?" Him- "I saw it on tv." Me- "Well you can't trust everything you hear on tv, dude." Him- "I know. But he's a good President." Me- "You obviously don't know very much about him then, so we'll have to agree to disagree for now." Him- "Well, my mom said so, too." Me (Knowing damn well it's a lie)- "Yeah, okay dude."
So later that evening when his mom got home, and sent him to their apt, we were sitting around bullshitting a little bit, and I told her about it. Her reaction- "What?! Next time he says something like that, ask him if he thinks this war is good, too." The next day I sat him down and told him, "I talked to your mom, and she told me she never told you Bush was a good President, in fact, she doesn't like him at all. It's okay to disagree with me and you have a right to your opinion, but if you want to discuss issues you need to be able to be honest and try to learn some facts. I'm not mad at you, but you have to remember next time that your mom and I are friends, and I know her better than you think I do."
So today I'm listening to C-Span while he eats lunch, and when he finished he asked, "So Bush started this war just for oil?"
So we got to sit down and have a little discussion about Bush, his administration, this war, and what the Republicans stand for. He's 9 and has a short attention span, but he is a genuinely curious little guy and actually sat with me for about an hour before running back to my Nintendo 64. It was an interesting afternoon. It's a good thing his mom and I agree on all these issues, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to talk to him frankly about his questions.
Before he went home this evening, he said, "Thanks for talking to me about the government today." :)
