This isn't terribly surprising, although the fact that he's accomplishing it in New York is a surprise.

Steroids might help power, but not average so much -- only to the extent that it makes you a more feared hitter. In any event, he had some great averages during the late 90s and early 2000s. I'm just shocked because - like you said - the NY media has been relentless with him.
