What's your favourite/least favourite Beatles song? Give reasons!!

...I'll start:

Favourite: ...I think the Beatles are the best band in the history of the universe, so I guess :headbang: it'll be tough for me to pick JUST ONE!!! Anyway...the song which strikes the deepest emotional chord for me, always does, is "Hey Jude". It's an anthemic masterpiece, beginning with a plaintive vocal and piano from McCartney, who is then slowly picked up by his musical mates and carried aloft to a joyous chorus sing-along crescendo. Any song that can make you sway back and forth, clap your hands and belt out "na na na naaaaaah" can't be half bad I say!:applause:

Least Favourite: ...actually there a lot to choose from here as well!!
...however, enough stalling.....it's a tie....between John's "Across The Universe" and Paul's "Here, There and Everywhere" :puke: ....I can't intellectually tell you why I don't like these ones...their sounds just irritate me, that's all!! They both drone on along a white bread and vanilla path. Pablum. Ugh. A couple of self-indulgent and wimpy efforts from two of the greatest songwriters in pop music history. I think it's the singers' stylings and perhaps the instrumentation which irritate me the most, as opposed to the songs themselves. I've heard covers which sound much better.

We both hate "Here, There..." but split on "Jude"....I find that in general I either hate or love McCartney songs..."She Said..." and "And Your Bird..." are both fantastic, underrated Lennon songs from Revolver.

You're the first person I've ever encountered who agrees with me. It's maudlin and drags on for what seems like an eternity, and I hate the melody. I've never been able to understand why people love the song so much.

11. Favorite: "Baby, You Can Drive My Car" and most of thier first album....

Can't say why, except their first album still sounds like nothing else to
me--beamed in from another planet.

Least favorite: "Run For Your Life"--stalker/domestic violence theme is
very creepy. Also, most of "Sargent Peppers".

on "Run for Your Life", it wasn't one that immediately came to mind to me as being one of the worst, but it definately is. That wouldn't fly these days..

12. There are soo many great songs.

So I'll just chime that "Your Bird Can Sing" is really underrated, as is the whole Beatles '65 album (very tongue in cheek -- "I'm a Loser," "Mr. Moonlight," etc. I always like train songs which I consider, "The One After 909"

I always skip "Number Nine," and I guess I wouldn't miss "She's Leaving Home" (Bye-bye)

13. Best: Tomorrow Never Knows. Worst-You Like Me Too Much

TNK is awesome because it's so innovative for its time. It was pretty gutsy for a band like the Beatles to put a song on their album, in 1966, consisting only of tape loops, drums, bass and distorted vocals.

You Like Me Too Much- George was really hit and miss in the early years. This was a big miss. Most of the B-side of "Help!" sucks anyway.

19. "A Day In The Life"

Anyone who ever listened to that song during an acid trip would have to agree it's hands down the best song the Beatles ever wrote/performed.

Which is pretty amazing considering the fact that they wrote so many dozens of amazingly fantastic songs.

I'd have to put "Hey Jude" up there as a distant Number 2. It always tugs at my soul. I don't know why. "Rocky Racoon" would be my Number 3. Still love the lyrics and find them subtly hilarious.

Their best dance song? "Eight Days A Week"!

Worst: "Revolution Number 9" and "Glass Onion. Jangle my nerves - very irritating.

Best rock group of all time. No contest.

..."A Day In the Life" wins hands down. Lennon's best ever vocal, best ever trippy lyrics....the lushest sounding track they ever recorded....an absolute masterpiece.

27. "A Day in the Life" is Probably Mine, Too

When I was 15, my family and I were visiting my mother's sister, who owned the recently released Sargent Pepper, which I put on the stereo when everyone else was out. My mother walked in during "A Day in the Life" just as it reached the start of that swirling crescendo of noises.

My mother just stood there mystified, looking increasingly alarmed, until she finally rushed over to the stereo shouting "Turn it off! Turn it off!" I think she thought the stereo was about to explode.

My next favorite is probably "Blackbird." It's hard to think of a least favorite Beatles song. I like them all.

23. Favorite: RAIN, Least Favorite: What Goes On

I absolutely HATE "What Goes On." It has a terrible tune, awful vocals by Ringo, terrible lyrics. It's simply a bad song, not merely a bad Beatles song.

My favorite would have to be "Rain," the b-side to "Paperback Writer." This song has NEVER gotten the respect it deserves. It is, simply put, one of that best things they ever did, and my personal favorite. A fantastic melody, psychadelic droning, and backwards guitar solo at the end. I love it.

Seriously though, how can you hate "Across the Universe"? I agree that the "Let it Be"-version is kind of annoying, but the wildlife version on "Past Masters II" is great and the version on "Let it Be... Naked" is absolutely fantastic - the definitive of the song.

26. Ya I'm thinking of the original "Let It Be" version I guess...

...it's the one most familiar to most people, the one that got the most airplay...

...I have both those other versions, and I almost consider them separately from the LIB version. They are better versions, I agree.
If I remember correctly, Lennon always said he hated the version on LIB, and thought Paul kind of sabotaged him on the recording of it somehow....Anyway...shows to go ya....different tastes, different strokes.

28. Actually Lennon liked the LIB version

He thought Paul sabotaged the Wildlife version, which in his mind ruined a song that should have been a single.

He thought Phil Spector salvaged it somewhat.

But Lennon was an interesting type. He always felt that his songs never measured up. Like many geniuses he found that nothing that was produced ever measured up to what he imagined. He even said he hated how "Strawberry Fields" turned out!

The LiB version, though, is way too slow and dirge-like. The LiBN version is one of my favorite ever Beatles tracks.

29. My Guitar Gently Weeps- Favorite

On edit- Reason- For this song, it has more to do with the music than the lyrics. The haunting melody makes an emotional connection, it's really an intangible thing.

Least favorite, I don't know, but it would be one of their goofy ones no doubt.

I have a special place in my heart for Across the Universe though, because MY favorite rock star, David Bowie, did a great cover of that song.

Just two really good songs that stand up to the test of time...

Love me do, No I don't never got into it....... Even when I was six years opld I thought it sucked......

38. "Long and Winding Road"/"Obla-di Obla-da"

The Long and Winding Road has been one of my favorite songs since preschool. It was one of a few songs I distinctly remember just blowing my mind when I listened to it on my parents' stereo. When I look back, they were mostly slow ballads with moderately complex but slow chord progressions and rich accompaniment. "Man For All Seasons" "Superstar" and "If You Could Read My Mind" are in that group.

Obla-di obla-da is just an obnoxious piece of filler, prone to earworming, of no social, musical, historical or psychedelic value. There are probably about 20 Beatles songs I won't listen to on the radio when I'm channel-surfing. The others I'm just either tired of or am looking for something else. this is probably the only one I dislike, and never liked.

Their version of George's "All Things Must Pass" even though it's rough and unfinished; I would have loved to have heard a finished version on an offical release..

I love "Nowhere man". Those gorgeous harmonies hook me into it at the very beginning. The Beatles could do some amazing harmonizing. I love the lyrics as well.

As for least favorite, it's off the Anthology series: "If You've Got Trouble". Why even bother recording it. Gawd awful in every way. No redeeming qualities whatsoever.

From a music critic pov: "A Day In the Life". Brilliant, original and very creative song.

I like them best when they really cut loose and George is actually allowed to play his guitar. George Martin held him back most of the time.

57. George Harrison was a lovely man too.

Before moving to Yorkshire, we lived in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire in a small Victorian cottage across the road from George Harrison's Friar Park estate. We couldn't see his house from our cottage because of the 7-foot tall wooden fence topped by three strands of razor barbed-wire, but one of the gatehouses was about 100 yards from our driveway (the gatehouses were also Victorian cottages with a lot of "gingerbread" trim on them, and they were bigger than our own cottage!).

Harrison moved to Henley in 1978 when he was still married to his first wife, Patti Boyd, but by the time we moved there in 1990 he had long been married to his Mexican-American wife Olivia. He used to be a regular at the pub just down the road, according to the pub landlord, but became a bit of a recluse after John Lennon was killed.

Olivia, on the other hand, was immersed in local life. She did charity work (helping Romanian orphans) and was a completely normal person, not a "rock star wife". We only had one supermarket in town for the longest time and she did the family shopping there. She never acted as if she deserved special treatment simply for being a Beatle's wife.

Because of our proximity to Friar Park's main gatehouse, we occasionally ran into George. Sometimes I saw him on his bicycle, or walking along the road next to his wooden fence. He would always smile or wave and say hello. My cousin, a huge Beatles fan, was visiting from Georgia once and he stopped for a couple of minutes to talk to her as she was walking into town - she was thrilled to bits.

Everyone locally knew how much George Harrison valued his privacy so no one ever hounded him. He found great peace living at Friar Park with his wife and son Dhani.

George was a thoroughly nice bloke and I was really sad when he died. You're absolutely right, he was the most under-rated of all the Beatles and he is sorely missed.

Henley-on-Thames is a beautiful place to live, but having a Beatle living over the road (even though we couldn't even see his house!) made it even more special.

I respected George Harrison for the love he had for his family and for the way he lived his life.
