I fell off a chair at work, twisting my leg, and totally severing my ACL in my left knee. I experienced excruciating pain and couldn't even move while splayed on the floor, not even getting into a sitting position. My boss, a lawyer, offered me a Coke. Seriously. If not to put against the knee (like I got a generic "boo-boo"), then rather to enjoy as a refreshing beverage to take my mind off my pain.
For whatever reason, my mind became as sharp as the pain and I shot back that I needed whiskey immediately. He looked at me as though I were crazy, like I wanted to get drunk. I explained that I was in incredible pain and I needed an immediate anesthetic in order to get help.
He reluctantly got his unopened bottle of Chivas Regal and gave me 2 ounces. And I was right. As the pain receded, my mind grew sharper and I was able to analyze the situation in order to get proper treatment. I was never "drunk" or inebriated, just able to get into a sitting position on the floor, then into a chair, and then able to hobble down the hall to the elevator, to the parking, and then drive the to PCP rather than wait 4+ hours in an emergency room (Yes: #1, the boss didn't offer to drive me anywhere or call an ambulance, and #2, it was the left leg and I had a manual/stick).
I wouldn't recommend alcohol like Tylenol or something stronger, but in a pinch, it can do wonders.
