Self-serving "congratulations to me" thread
Dammit, I just realized that as of the eleventh of this month, my little one man home-based computer repair business has been in existence for two years.

AND I'M STILL HERE.

:toast:  :bounce: :wow: :nuke:  :hi: :grouphug: :headbang: :woohoo: :applause:

3. I have question for you
Can you get viruses from websites? My dad claims that everytime that I use his computer there are new virueses on here. He said it comes from websites that I visit, such as the "godhatesfags.com" and some tattoo site that I visited to get a pattern. I had a friend tell me that it's probably the forwarded mesgs. he gets from his friends but he keeps arguing with me that isn't it because he knows who is sending him the mail. So he blames me everytime that the computer messes up.
He's been on vacation in Canada and is coming home tonight. I've had no problems with the computer or this site except that it is a bit slow and my computer keeps saying it can't open DU but it does anyways. I think it's cause the Internet has been a little slow lately or the server's acting up. Last year when he went on vacation and I used the computer it messed up.

Is it also possible that viruses from forwarded e-mails can lay dormant for a while until it is somehow activated?

I certainly hope that DU doesn't have any hidden worms or viruses unknown to the admins.

Thanks so much.

Dee

4. Absolutely, positively., completely, YES YOU CAN.
A good virus scanner is essential. The web-based virus is epidemic-- they're mostly trojans and scripts that autoload as soon as you are on their site.

To activate an email virus you have to open the message-- sometimes that's all it takes. (Mostly, though, it will reside in an attachment or a link which needs to be opened.) If your email reader has a preview pane, turn it off. (In Outlook, it's on by default-- it's a gigantic security hole that they still haven't addressed.)

The only thing DU has that I don't approve of is popups. I don't care if it IS a source of income-- it's an intrusion, and I won't put up with it.

If you don't have a good virus scanner, and you have essential documents on your computer, stay offline until you install one. And the three most important words you should remember are: 1 BACKUP. 2 BACKUP. 3 BACKUP.

7. But my dad blames me for most of the computer's screw-ups
And he has Norton's Anti-virus program and I think it has a scanner. He also has a program that blocks pop-ups.

I just don't know why it's always me and the sites that I go to and he tells me he never has a problem when he is on cause he goes to sites that he is familiar with and I am visiting websites for research or whatever. Such as the links here on DU that people post.

I just wonder if he might be hitting sites that are picking up these viruses and it doesn't act up until a few days later when coincidently I get on it.

8. Norton is broken.
I've discarded it because every virus maker out there knows how to chop it into little pieces. And they so far have not addressed that at Symantec.

I use McAfee (Network Associates) Enterprise antivirus scanner. Probably a bit expensive for home users, but it works, and works very well. I put McAfee Internet Security on all my client machines.

11. I had McAffee on my old computer
and I liked it better than Norton. I will write down the software that you mentioned and keep it for reference. BTW how much would they cost?
