This might be a good Lounge post...Marfa Lights...It's late, this is fun..

(Another post in GD reminded me of this...)

Has anybody ever heard of the mysterious Marfa Lights?

There is a place out in bum-f west Texas that has the most intriguing and dumbfounding thing I have ever seen. It's called the Marfa Lights.

Marfa is a very small town in south west Texas. The movie Giant was shot there. Near there is an observatory and an old calvary fort. I visited all of these places during a "site suvey" for television.

Anyway, there is nothing to do out there at night. Either eat or drink. I convinced my survey-mates after dinner to see what the Marfa lights thing as about, because there was nothing else to do in the town.

(They don't photograph well, I've seen video from $60,000 broadcast quality cameras with "night lenses" that didn't show much.)

We went out with my pretty good binoculars and parked at the "lights:" site. And damn. They were there.

They bounced and they came up and down in different configurations. Different numbers. There were some lights in the distance from ranches, pole lights, but this was not the mystery lights.

No, they were not car headlights reflecting off the atmosphere. No roads out that way, and the lights have been seen by the Native Americans living there before the white man (legends tell of them being there forever) and the pioneers that came later settled and also saw them. Also during WW1, there was a flight traing school out in Marfa, and the student pilots got confused with the lights when trying to land.

There is no answer...I'm just putting this up as a WTF?

4. Sorry. I meant to say Texan repukes
Although, coming from New Mexico and Colorado, my disdain of Texans was at least acquired honestly.

5. Oh yes. There is more than a little bit of anomisity between Texasn
New Mexicans and especially Coloradans.

And I'm not from Texas either. Nebraska and Wisconsin. So I don't have any "dammit I grew up there" sillyness.

BUT, I don't like region or state bashing...it just drives me crazy.

I'm now a Texan and so is my Brit wife. We will defend our state. :-)

Are there some idiots here? OH yeah. Threre's also some pretty good dems. Don't count us out!

6. amen to that -- state/ region or nation bashing is silly and

shows up people's ignorance. it's amusing that some duers will bash southerners and then condemn right-wingers who bash the french!

there ARE jerks everywhere and good people everywhere.

regional jokes are ok, imo, if they're funny and not taken seriously. i grew up in a military family, lived all over, wound up in georgia due to my husband taking a job here. in georgia we tell alabama jokes; in alabama they tell mississippi jokes.

e.g., did you hear about what happened when a bunch of georgia boys and a bunch of alabama boys got in a fight over fourth of july weekend? the alabama boys threw
firecrackers at the georgia boys. the gerogia boys lit 'em and threw 'em back.

:rim shot:

7. Loved the "rim shot" How many people understand that anymore?
And I'm in total agreement. Regional jokes OK, if taken in the spirit of the whole thing.

But DemBones...I've seen so many posts calling Texans this and that and it gets old. We voted in 2004 in Austin, Houstin, and (almost) Dallas and SA for Kerry. These are very large population centers. I think I can almost guarantee by '08 well be a blue state. Just by virte of the fact we have so many Mexicans coming in.

Almost, I'll pay $5.00 to you if we're not( blue ).

I'm confident.
