Nicole Kidman to Tom Cruise: "Leave our children out of Scientology"
http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/LondonFreePress/Today/2005/07/17/1135594-sun.html

There's a battle of beliefs between Tom Cruise and his former wife, Nicole Kidman. Tom has angered her by breaking their agreement not to foist either of their religions on their children, Isabella, 12, and Connor, 10. Nicole, a Catholic, is disturbed to learn he's steering the kids into wacky Scientology, something he promised wouldn't happen when they divorced. Friends say Nicole's "blood boiled" when she learned their children are being "home-schooled" in Scientology by Tom's sisters. They say she told him: "I don't care what you do with your girlfriend, but leave our children out of Scientology." Scientologists reportedly hook the children up to "e-meter" devices used to interrogate and relieve them of guilt. Tom's fiancee, Katie Holmes, also a Catholic, is being instructed in the Scientology belief that alien spirits ("Thetans") that once dwelt in volcanos must be driven from the human mind and body. Sources say Katie, like Tom's children, is apparently becoming a believer and has been assigned a full-time Scientology adviser. When she's not studying her new religion, she's trying on wedding dresses, cooing about having Tom's children and saying, "It will be a huge honour for me to do a movie with him."

PREDICTION: What has been an amicable friendship between Tom and Nicole will dissolve in the face of the Scientology row and the kids will suffer as a result.

1. Tom Cruise needs to accept his own homosexuality
and quit dragging other people into his charade.

19. Interesting that you should say this.
I've often wondered if the reason he got involved in it was to 'absolve himself of homosexual feelings' for the 'good of his career.'

If so, he's a pretty sick ticket. You can't make it go away--it's who and what you are.

20. Scientology "Security Check"...
http://www.planetkc.com/sloth/sci/homo.sec.check.html

Have you ever taken the passive role in sex?

Have you ever led others to believe you took only the active role in sex?

Have you ever practised sex with a member of the opposite sex?

Have you ever persuaded young boys to take part in homosexual activities?

Have you ever had sex with an old homo?

Have you ever taken money for sex?

Have you ever received gifts for sex?

Have you ever lied about your conquests?

Have you ever interfered with members of your own sex?

Have you ever come between other homosexuals?

Have you ever caused another to be bitchy?

Have you ever been bitchy?

Have you ever lied about another's sexual prowess?

Have you ever lied about your own sexual prowess?

Have you ever persuaded a non-homo to have sex with you?

Have you ever been unfaithful?

Have you forced sex upon anyone?

Have you taken part in a sex orgy?

Have you ever failed to take the active role in sex?

Have you ever failed to take the passive role in sex?

Have you ever perverted anyone?

Have you ever taught anyone an unnatural practice?

Have you ever given bad sex to anyone?

Have you ever aped a woman?

Have you ever aped a man?

Have you entered into a wife-husband relationship with another homosexual?

Have you ever tried to cultivate a female body?

Have you ever tried to cultivate a male body?

Have you ever tried to ape another homosexual?

Has a withold been missed so far?

What question should be on this check for others?

22. OMG! These people are pretty whacked out!
They obviously believe homosexuality is some sort of behavioural disorder and deviant belief system. What is WRONG with these people (Scientologists)?

I was taken aback by the question of sleeping with young boys. That one is so offensive. Wanting to sleep with boys is pedophilia, not homosexuality. Big difference.

Wow--it's hard to say if Tom just had some 'thoughts' at some point that they convinced him meant something was wrong with him OR if he is seriously harbouring feelings of attraction for men.

After watching the over the top way he felt he needed to profess his 'love' of Katie Holmes on Oprah, I don't think he ever seemed more closeted than that exact moment for me.

26. Depending on how "tinfoil hat" you want to get...
Edited on Sun Jul-17-05 05:49 PM by Bush_Eats_Beef
...the good folks in the Scientology organization have spent a buttload of money to "launder" the personal lives of John Travolta and Tom Cruise. You can Google either one, and they are both supposed to have one or more Gay romps. I've seen NO EVIDENCE that Scientology supports a Gay lifestyle. And for anyone who believes Tom Cruise's UTTER BULLSHIT about the freedom to "be a Christian and a Scientologist," read L. Ron Hubbard's "O.T.VIII."

This SICK MOTHERF**KER believed that he was the AntiChrist. He believed that his mission was to PREVENT the "Second Coming" of Jesus Christ. But HEY...don't LISTEN TO ME...just READ OT VIII:

http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Fishman/Declaration/ot8b.html

TOM CRUISE IS A LYING P.O.S.

For the record, I'm straight...not that it matters...but I do believe that life is just TOO DAMNED SHORT.

If a person is Gay, and they're HAPPY, SO...BE...IT.

It's not the business of any government / religion / PSEUDO-religion to determine how human beings achieve happiness.

"Life...liberty...and the pursuit of happiness."

FUCK anyone who doesn't GET that.

30. Yeah those are some sick puppies.
Come on, the ANTICHRIST?!?

Well, I think Kirstie stayed with them, because they helped her get off coke.

I had heard vague rumblings about John Travolta, but frankly I'm not surprised.

It's just sad. You're right, life's too short. This kind of system just supports people hating themselves and buying into the belief that there is something wrong with them if they want to love someone that society deems inappropriate. That's just not cool.

Seriously, the day he was on Oprah was very telling. It all seemed so staged, hollow and shallow. It didn't seem sincere. Just like some weird publicity stunt. No one needs to act out that way when they are sincerely in love with someone. Particularly someone that used to say they are so (ahem)'private.'

While both parents are jetting around the world for their careers- who is with them 24 hours a day? If Nicole means what she says, maybe she should spend more time with them during these critical years.

You are certain that NIcole is leaving them alone while she flies all over the world? How did you come across this info? And, what of Tom? What are his responsibilities? I'm curious as to how you have enough information to judge their parenting skills.

The children spend 6 months of the year with each parent. I don't know if Nicole cares for them herself during the 6 months of the year that she has with them, so I shouldn't judge.

8. You know, I'm totally torn with this whole scientology deal...
On the one hand scientology seems bizarre and creepy to me and him doing that seems doubly creepy particularly if it was against an agreement he had with his ex-wife.

On the other hand, I've also always found it creepy to take kids to an altar with a large re-enactment of a crucified, tortured man, and to make them simulate eating his body and drinking his blood, and confessing thier sins to a shadowy man hidden behind a veiled window (for the record I was raised catholic and I found it creepy when my parents did that as well). Yet I would imagine if the article were about Cruise the Scientologist making a stink about Nicole trying to raise them catholic people would think he was being an idiot and there would be no end to the outraged response.

So what do I know.

10. theres a difference
For one thing, parents who differ in their beliefs can take a middle ground which says we will expose the children to the beliefs that we have chosen, but allow them to decide for themselves. My father was an atheist and my mother was a Lutheran, and this is what they did. Results: One atheist, one liberal christian, one fundamentalist.

The other thing is the degree of isolation which the belief system demands. What Cruise is doing is forcing everyone in his life to adapt totally to his views, even if it means they have to have a 24 hour guard on duty. I doubt Nicole Kidman has anything more than weekly church and confirmation classes planned for them.

13. And I agree that Cruise is in the wrong from the perspective of...
...going against the agreement they made. From a legal and/or parenting perspective he's being a jerk (and for the record I loathe him to beging with). But I can't help thinking that people would be taking the opposite reaction if he were bitching about her taking them to Catholic church. I'm an atheist so to me all religion or belief seems the same to me. There's definitely a certain amount of hypocricy amongst religious people mocking Tom Cruise and the whole scientology deal.

As for the degree of isolation thing, how is that any different than say the Amish or Hasidic judaism or mormons or any religious group that encourages staying within that group as much as possible when it comes to association and such.

15. I think this is one of the most painful aspects of divorce
Its really hard to raise children the way you planned to. And I agree, Tom Cruise is pretty much getting it from every angle for the Scientology thing.

There are plenty of groups which tend towards isolation, but at least mainstream Catholicism isn't one of them.

As I understand it Tom and Nicole agreed to joint custody, 6 months out of the year with her, 6 months with him. Apparently his sisters are doing the lions share of the child care when the children are with him and Nicole has no say as to what goes on when they are there.
Scientology 6 months out of the year and Catholicism the other 6 months. Those aren't even in the same ball park. Its got to be very confusing for the children until they are old enough to decide for themselves.

I have a relative who has the following situation- kids are Catholic one weekend, Pentecostal the next, had to be sorted out by lawyers. I won't be surprised at all if the children decide not to go to church at all when they are old enough.

28. There's an entire raging debate among religious sociologists
regarding the term "cult" and if/how they're distinguishable from "standard" religions. I kind of think that considering all religions as "cults" renders the term pretty useless - even from a pejorative standpoint - in any discourse about them. It's a tough one to define...

Edited on Sun Jul-17-05 07:27 PM by AuntieM1957
You know, I remember the cross/blood stuff as feeling "false".

Even as a little kid, what I thought was important was the message of love and peace. That giving up your life for me/washed in the blood stuff - really strange.

But try telling Southern Baptists that and they'll turn on the hellfire and guilt machine to the max.

And I used to wonder why I despise the fundies so - your post made me realize just how bizarre that stuff really is.

Frankly, I don't see the point of the blood - and think it only serves to control and re-inforce guilt.

So over all that now, am I.

21. Any sort of religious fervor and eccentricity is unattractive and
unappealing. :boring:

It's one thing for someone to love their religion, their god, their spirituality and that to just be reflected in their actions and the kind of person that they are. They don't HAVE to profess it or even tell anyone about it, it just flows from them.

But the obnoxious, over the top need to convert all one comes in contact with--it seems to come from some inner insecurity. It frightens people and drives them away (in droves).

I speak from experience...I have said goodbye to a few people that became a little too insistent that I 'join them.'
