Is it possible to become confused about one's identity?

1. I've been asking the opposite question for 25 years

Is it possible to become unconfused and confident about one's identity? Some people have all the luck, I guess. I just remember Lionel Trilling's comment that the road to truth is filled with contradictions, and then let my itinerant identity wander where it will. My house has many rooms, and don't ask about the clutter.
