Franklin Lakes, NJ area - how is it?

I was contacted recently by a company in Franklin Lakes, NJ... just wondering what sort of area it is - is it a good family area with good public schools? How far is it to NYC? Is there a train or similar available to get into the city? (just thinking of a job for my wife, too, in regards to NYC)

I'm in the Hartford, CT area now and a quick check of homefair.com indicates that it is a little more expensive, but not significantly so...

I know homefair.com is not 100% accurate, but I think it indicated that it was 10% higher than where I lived in the Hartford, CT area.

Maybe I'm way off base, however?

Having a lot of equity to transfer could be considered having bucks.

My uncle lives there. Many very large homes. I would be surprised if there are many homes there under 1 million dollars. I don't know much about the school system.

I guess the 30-35% raise isn't going to be enough unless my wife gets similar.

12. thanks, I think it's a bit out of our price range...

I'm trying to figure out how homefair.com came up with an 8% difference between my town in the Hartford area & Franklin Lakes when our 1 year old 2,500 sq foot colonial with a 1000 sq foot walk-out basement on 1.5 acres would get maybe $400,000 and I can't even find anything close to that in FL, Oakland or Wyckoff for under $750,000 on realtor.com... (that would be our top limit if my wife found a job with a raise similar to what mine would be)

8. There are towns nearby

that are more affordable to live in. The schools there are very good.Not far from NYC at all, a pretty easy commute whether by car or public transportation.

In another post you mention Fairfield County CT, Bergen County NJ is very similar.

Going back a few years, though.

There are a *lot* of Republicans. This may have changed in the past five years or so....

As to the cost of living. Houses are very expensive. You can try to look at communities near Franklin Lakes, like Oakland (right next door), Wyckoff (next door on the other side, but more expensive than Oakland, if I recall correctly)...Mahwah...

Bergen County is one of the most expensive counties in New Jersey--if possible, and you don't mind too much of a ride, look just over the border in NY state (Suffern, um...Airmont...over there) or in Passaic County, NJ (Wanaque, Pompton Lakes which is right next to Oakland)...

Being smack dab in suburbia, FL is great for families (uh, LOL, rich soccer mom families) and schools in Franklin Lakes are excellent. They don't have their own high school--half the kids go to Indian Hills (where all of Oakland goes) and half go to Ramapo (where all of Wyckoff goes). Lots of trains....I think you're looking at....about 45 minutes into Manhattan if I remember correctly?

The company I'd be looking at is actually located in Franklin Lakes... I'm just thinking that if my wife had to find a job, NYC is probably pretty easy for her to find one.
