What is the worst smell?
Edited on Mon Jul-18-05 02:47 PM by Shell Beau
I hate the smell of greens or cabbage cooking, fishy fish, my hubby's gas (almost makes me puke).

I forgot a paper mill. They stink beyond belief.

Anything involving sulphur is pretty bad. Dead critters are bad. Skunk when you have been sprayed is pretty bad. Rank outhouses are pretty bad.

But the Corpus Christi city dump. Unreal.

36. Paper mills are definitely on the list
When I was a kid, we often used to cross from Internaitonal Falls, Minnesota, to Fort Frances, Ontario, and there was a paper mill right near the customs stations. Not only could you see the mill dumping vomity-looking waste right into the river (in those pre-EPA days) but sometimes the smell was so bad that you couldn't breathe without coughing.

I've heard that meth labs are similarly noxious, but I've never smelled one.

35. I once went to the hospital to see my Dad who just had surgery
No problems with Dad. Me and some family members were walking down a corridor when the smell of some strong chemical hit me. I don't know what that was, but my eyes and nostrils burned like hell, I couldn't breathe and had to crawl (yes, crawl) back to where I came. Everybody else went on unfazed. I was pissed because nobody believed it was that bad. But it was.

That was a temporary room where they held people who had just been operated. What the hell was that?

42. Hands down easy,
A pup with parvo. Nasty, nasty disease that effects the digestion of dogs, if not caught early on, it is fatal. Parvo virus infects the cells of the bowel and digestive tract, along with attacking the white blood cells. It kills and necrocizes these cells, with are then flushed out the intestine, along with blood and other fluid. What comes out is the most putrid, insanely stinking mass I have ever seen or smelled.

Please, please, make sure that all dogs that you know are vaccinated for this virus. It can be fatal, and if it doesn't kill your dog, it will certainly affect its quality of life for the rest of its life.

43. I lived for two years near a paper mill in Georgia
on the Savannah River. Most of the time the wind blew the other way. But when the wind blew the smell into town it was unbearable. It was sickly sweet beyond sweet and seemed to get caught in your throat. Days later, I still couldn't get the smell out of my head. I agree with you that it's got to be one of the worst all-time smells.

But I think dead bodies are the worst, for anyone who's ever had the misfortunate occasion to sample that smell.

in August. The stink hits you from the street. Imagine what spoiled chicken smells like i your garbage and multiply by 20000.

50. Stink story
Years ago I worked for a dry cleaning shop. Joe, the guy who owned the shop, owned the whole building, and the remainder of it was a Mexican restaurant. The restaurant owner fell behind in rent payments and, after a few months, Joe had enough. So they changed the locks on the doors, and a few days later the electric company cut off the juice for non-payment.

Fast forward about three months. Joe finally got around to going into the restaurant space to see what the deal was. There was a godawul reek in the place. He went back with a couple of other guys later and then they found the 1/2 ton of ground beef that had been stored in the freezer (now off for 3 mos) just before he changed the locks. His eyes were still watering when he came back to the cleaners. "Indescribable" summed it up.

Paper mills are horrible - 20 miles away from Green Bay I asked a friend what the horrific sulfuric stench was - it was the paper mills in Packerland.
