Well, it looks as if my days are now wide open.
At 4:30 this afternoon, I had an audience with my general manager at work, and was summarily told that my services were no longer required. I was upset then, but I've had time to think about it, and I know I've been ready to move on for the last few months. Back in March, there was a "realignment" which left me and a few others relegated back to entry-level work. Things were a lot more stressful, and there was quite a bit of turnover. Also, the engineer who had the same position as me was a bit buddy-buddy with the manager, so maybe that had something to do with it, I don't know. So now I have some time to figure out, at 31, what the hell I want to do with my life.

5. Been there, done that.
It was the BEST thing that ever happened to me.

I went from being an accountant, to a student, to a social worker.

And I later adopted my beautiful daughter (she wouldn't be in my life if I hadn't been laid off).

I later went back to law school, graduated, and I'm now law-clerking for some attorneys I met while social-working.

See ... it all works out for the best.

But I'm sending healing and comfort energy your way!

Take care (I care)!

8. That's what I'm thinking.
Thankfully, it happened during a (very short-lived, apparently) period of financial calm. I'm pretty sure I'll wind up with something better. Thanks.

10. Just wanted you to have some perspective.
It was really a downer when it happened to me.

But ... from a long-term perspective .. it was the best.

I'm glad you'll be o.k. financially for awhile.

9. Find something they can't outsource
I would take the summer off and live on unemployment. Sit back for a while and think about what you want to do and what they can't outsource.

Good Luck!

I'm putting together two-bit computer programs for two-bit local businesses for two-bit pay, and I'm sick of it. But at least that means I'm able to sit up all night and post on DU, and sleep a large part of the day before getting down to work.

Best of luck to you!

28. Ride the unemployment benefits train as long as you can!
It's awesome, if it keeps you in enuff money to stay afloat until it runs out. Take your time looking, and think about going independent if you can swing it. Or just find another joe job, but at your leisure.

Hang in there B. Hopefully this will serve as an opportunity for you to find something more fulfilling. When Chavez got the axe it was scary. While the bigger pay checks would be helpful, him being available to move and get ready for grad school has been amazing.

Ride the bene's as long as you can. Good luck to you.

Christ, BtBM. It's one thing to ponder about the direction of your life...it's another thing entirely to be forced to do so.

That sucks, guy. I'm so damned sorry. Why does this kind of shit happen to people I really care about?

I hope an opportunity comes along soon for you.

33. aw, that sucks
but if it's not want you wanted, it's better than waking up at 51 wondering what the heck you did.

think of it as an opportunity to reassess and reprogram yourself. get a library card. read all the books you 'always meant to read' (I suggest some Doestoyevsky, it's long, takes concentration, and you look good in the coffee shop) mope around for a day or two, and then start looking around for something interesting. Enjoy it, it'll be the longest vacation you get to take until you retire!

ok, that's all find and dandy to say from my position, right? well, sure, although I have been there, and when it comes down to it, it's better to take it lightly than let it eat you up inside. Good luck.

Look for a hospital that's not owned by some private corporation if you can - a university hospital, for example.

40. I'm sorry Beast Man
My husband is an engineer and he's been in that situation many times over our 30 year marriage.

Are you open to moving back to Pgh? There is a company there called Technical Solutions,Inc. that places engineers into temp. to hire jobs. Good people, no fee to you. It's an option.

Meanwhile, hang in there!
