18. I've never believed it was that simple
But that was definitely a big part of it, and certainly the genesis of it all.

I think it's more because people have made it more.

22. It really is that simple...
Look I was around it in the beginning, back in the mid to late seventies.

Cleveland had nothing, nothing but we had a hole mess of punk bands...

They rebelled because they had been left nothing by their parents except a burning fuckin' river, a rotting downtown, a mass migration out, no jobs, you name it. We were like the Liverpool of the US...

Think Flint without Michael Moore...

Now I was heavily into the drinking and going wild part at that time, hung out with a mess of punks and they were just rebelling because it was the only thing left to do....

You get it. There was no Future. It was really fucking bleak....

So that's why I think the whole attitude of punk is Fuck you. That's the only expression there is. Anything else was just layered on top of it by people who weren't into it before it became a fashion sub genre....

24. There are many ways to say "Fuck you".
I think Punk can deal in the higher ideas and still say Fuck You.

I'll admit it, I think Punk rock grew up a little bit.

That's my impression, but I'm sure you can (and maybe should) easily dismiss me, because I wasn't quite old enough to directly experience the first wave.

Anyway,

26. I am not being dismissive...
In the end it's just pop music which is a reflection of the popular culture at a particular time.....

So adding more into than that is kind of defeats the purpose....

Look, Punk is punk. Avril Lava brain thinks she is punk because she snarls and frowns at a camera....

Well yea, part of it is attitude but the true expression of punk, in it's early days, wasn't to say fuck you as a way of saying look at me look at me....

It was a cry of frustration and an expression of rage as we watched the industrial world of our parents crumble down about us...

Think about it. Punk sprung up from the factory city's of the older industrial countries like Britain, Germany and the US. In many of those city's there was nothing there. The generation before us had turned into themselves and were walking zombies, not hippies but people who grew up in the 40's and 50's..... All that was great was crumbling down around the middle class.....

They won the war and lost their future when it finally came....

Man I'm going off on a wild tangent here....

In the US, Greenwich Village was a haven for artist in the 30's 40's 50's. But it crumbled into block after block of burned out city . And that's were the punks went...

Now it's gentrified........ Some monument heh...

Anyway, tell me to fuck off if you want, in the true spirit of punk, but I just wanted to give you a little perspective about the 70's.....

Of course, musically, it was a rebellion against Disco.... and power pop groups like Boston and Foreigner.....

29. I didn't mean dismissive in the bad way
I mean your view of the original punk movement is much clearer and less obscurred than mine. When discussing the spirit of the punk movement, my opinion should be discounted, as it is not first hand.

In other words, I'll take your word for it.

46. Dude! CLEVELAND!
Rocket from the Tombs, the Dead Boys, Pere Ubu......sweet merciful crap, man that's FANTASTIC! Damn I would have liked to have been around for that!

Unfortunately the closest I got was Minneapolis in the late 80s/early 90s....too late for Husker Du and the Replacements, and too early for Polara and Semisonic. All we got was the warmed-over arena rock of Soul Asylum. Meh.

He was a jerk, but hey what was I expecting. He now writes a column for the Cleveland Plain Dealer.. Go Figure.....

Husker Du, I got one of there albums around here some place....

Pere Ubu was always cool, but more experimental than punk....

I hung around with some of the guys who went ina nd out of bands, I was too drunk most of the time to appreciate what was going on but then again, so where they......

It was really cool but very depressing in Cleveland at that time....

40. I might be raising a punk
My daughter has been listening to some pretty good newer type punk for a while and I turned her on to a few bands from my days back in the 80's.
Most of the more core stuff was too much for her, but she picked up on Suicidal Tendencies. Really likes the "All I wanted was a Pepsi"
line.
