29. yeah, someone voted for this idiot
http://www.boston.com/news/odd/articles/2005/01/27/state_senator_wants_to_save_cockfights/

State Sen. Frank Shurden, a longtime defender of cockfighting, is suggesting that roosters be given little boxing gloves so they can fight without bloodshed. The proposal is in a bill the Democrat has introduced for the legislative session that begins Feb. 7.

"Who's going to object to chickens fighting like humans do? Everybody wins," Sen. Frank Shurden said.

Oklahoma voters banned cockfighting in 2002. The practice is still legal in Louisiana and New Mexico.

By all means, let roosters fight "like humans do"!!!!!

4. Until about a month ago, I thought it was illegal everywhere.
Evidently, it's not.

I'm not a vegan or a member of PETA, but cockfighting (and dogfighting and bullfighting) cross the line for me. Causing harm to an animal for food or medical research is justified in some cases, IMHO. Causing harm to animals for entertainment is not.

10. Now if one of the participants was human...
that might be entertaining...like when a bull runs around with a matador on his horns.

Rodeo I can sort of see since that is more or less an exhibition of the cattleman's skills. But personally I don't find it the least bit interesting.

But no, I can't imagine the mind of the people who would even think of this shit, let alone actually do it.

28. rodeos are animal abuse too
Calf roping, hello? Letting a baby animal run at full speed and jerking their necks back? How sick is that?

Plus the electric prods, the horses that get hurt, the teaching children in the audience that animal cruelty is OK... or letting a bunch of kids run around after a terrified pig?

Rodeos get caught all the time flagrantly violating their own rules on animal abuse. This guy has tons of undercover video of it all:

18. so - let me get this straight - the answer to animal cruelty is...
... human cruelty?

I don't quite think that is the right way to go about it. In fact, i surimise that these folks are cruel to animals because someone was cruel to them.

Perhaps eliminating cruelty towards people would go further to stopping cruelty towards animals than soliciting cruelty against humans who are cruel to animals.

just a thought.

14. I think any sport involving animals sucks.
Some suck worse than others but what it comes down to for me is that the animals have NO CHOICE in the matter. If humans want to beat the shit out of each other, or run until they collapse, or whatever they think is sport, FINE. They have the choice to participate or not participate. But bulls, greyhounds, roosters, horses, etc. have no choice whether or not they want to be beaten, stabbed, run into the ground, or murdered for absolutely no good reason. How awful. And for what? So people can be entertained? So people can bet money? I'm sorry but that's no excuse.

Believe me, I'm not a vegetarian. I believe that the earth's creatures provide for one another. Many animals in addition to humans are carnivores or omnivores. And many animals work together for food or survival. The earth has a symbiotic relationship and I respect that. That is why I don't have a problem with eating meat or using animals to help us do things, as long as the the animals are treated well and killed humanely.

But I don't agree with forcing them to endure exhausting races (only to be discarded as soon as they stop winning), maim or kill each other, or be maimed or killed by humans simply for entertainment purposes. That is too selfish, cruel and wasteful.

But I would really like to know where you find meat from animals killed humanely, and which methods you consider humane. As far as I know none are euthanized by lethal injection, but many are boiled alive, bled to death, beaten, etc.

24. If they're good enough for Wilford Brimley, they're good enough for me
Edited on Wed Jul-20-05 10:57 AM by no name no slogan

Wilford Brimley thinks banning cockfighting isn't the right thing to do.
The grandfatherly actor and oatmeal pitchman attended a rally in Phoenix yesterday to voice opposition to Proposition 201, an Arizona cockfighting ban expected to pass Tuesday....

"My saddle horses are my friends," said Brimley, 64. "My dogs are my friends. Once an idea like this gets started, I don't know where it's going to end."....

...Cockfighting is legal in Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Missouri and Louisiana. Missouri voters will also consider a ban Tuesday. Brimley, who lives in Utah, says he visits Arizona to attend cockfights.

"Cockfighting. It's the right thing to do ™."

37. I eat chickens.
You kill chickens by cutting their heads off. Hopefully you get it on one whack. Sometimes it takes too. There was once a chicken body that lived for months with a severed head. It's owner kept it alive by feeding it through its open throat. Made a bit of money in freak shows.

I hope you don't eat chicken.

51. That was the original idea behind kosher and halal foods
You kill the animal quickly and as painlessly as possible and drain all the blood from it before it is eaten. Yeah, it's still gruesome, but there's a reason why that's in the Bible and Quran: you don't want to subject the animal to a slow, painful and overly cruel death.

Unfortunately our modern industrial food processing methods have lost touch with that reality.

However, they are beautiful animals. Plus I like hanging out with my friends and their families. Its nice to step outside of your own culture for awhile (the fights I have been to have been in Mexico).

Finally, there is something exciting and visceral about watching something where there is a fight to the death. I'm a fan of human bloodsports also because it kinda strips away the phoniness of everyday life.

44. Saw cockfights in Puerto Rico
I went out of curiosity since it is legal there. They had them in a pretty big modern, air-conditioned arena. The spurs were made of plastic, not metal, and were secured to the legs with tape and hot wax. They would shake stuffed (toy) roosters at the cocks right before the fight to fire them up. Saw 5 or 6 fights - pretty vicious, but I don't think any cocks died. Some definitely got hurt and some just seemed to give up. It was actually kind of boring after seeing one or two fights.

I agree that it is cruel, but bullfights seem worse to me. I think they alwzays kill the bull.
