Can Gay guy's judge hot chicks?
I just watched a clip of Jenny Mcarthy's new show and a gay guy was the hot chick evaluator for Playboy.

Isn't that like me (a hetro man) being a judge for hot guys?

3. It's not exactly the same.
Edited on Wed Jul-20-05 11:04 AM by Shredr
Culturally, it's more acceptable for a man to judge women than for a man to judge men so, even though you can probably tell a hot guy from a not-hot guy, you'd feel really uncomfortable sitting on TV and discussing it (most likely). A gay man may not be into hot chicks the way you are, but we can still tell a hot one from a not-hot one (and are usually more objectively critical).

My $.02

4. I don't think it's the same. I could be wrong..
but I think there's a difference between men & women in this area. Women are expected to be Barbi-look-alikes in order to be considered "hot", so it doesn't matter who the judge is.. het man, het woman, gay man, or lesbian.

7. Better question: Why can't some chicks judge gay guys?
Women end up dating/marrying guys that are in the closet alot nowadays...

I had an ex-girlfriend get an engagement broken off by a guy that "turned gay".

That's pretty messed up.

8. Of course they can.
I mean, a straight guy can judge a good looking guy. They aren't attracted to that guy...but said hetero guy can judge whether a guy is good looking or not.

Same dynamic with gay men and women. :-)

Just because a person can discern what will sell a mainstream magazine doesn't necessarily mean that person wants to boink the contestant's brain's out. :eyes:

15. I think the lust factor could possibly cloud things up a bit.
Sometimes if I'm feeling a bit lusty I might find a particular guy more attractive than I normally would. On the other hand I've seen men that I thought were absolutely beautiful who I've had no desire for. This is what it's like when I see a beautiful woman. The lack of the lust factor, I think, can keep you more objective.

17. The lust factor might not apply so strongly
if the "judge" were a gay man, though. Maybe I'm cynical, or maybe it's my consulting background, but I believe anyone with experience in marketing and strategic communications can pretty easily predict what will "sell" and what won't. Our American tastes are not so difficult to discern. USA Today once did an actual study on what "sells" front pages: rack display, what should be placed above the fold, etc. The results ran along the lines of blond, scantily clad women posed in close proximity to red sports cars.

34. Yes...how do you think we got Kate Moss and all the waif-like models?
My best friend was at the helm of one of the top modeling agencies in New York shortly after the START of the supermodel phase (mid 80's)

One of the biggest reasons he got out of the business (and these are HIS WORDS AND HE IS GAY) is that gay males who actually HATE women imposed their view of what is gorgeous on the modeling industry.

His claim to fame was being in charge of new faces at a time when supermodels really were gorgeous...his "tear sheet" book is full of some of the most stunning faces in the business (and names you would know)...and to this day...he knows a hot woman when he sees one.

41. This is something I suspect.
Gay guys who are into esthetics are tougher in judging women than they ought to be, or at least tougher than a straight guy. If your primary focus is pure esthetics, rather than sex appeal or femininity, you will definitely have different tastes. Its plausible to me that this has resulted in so many top fashion models with no discernable femininity, though they are certainly esthetically beautiful.

40. I think there's something odd about it
like the above poster says, this is where a lot of the waifish supermodel thing came from.

I think most straight guys will think a woman is hot even if she's a little chubby or has a smaller chest or curly brown hair or whatever is outside the boundary of what's considered "hot."

(Goddamn rail thin big chested straight-blonde-haired bitches)

I don't trust gay guys to have the same ability to look at the "total package" and see what's really sexually attractive, simply because it's something that they're not sexually attracted to themselves.

It's like "queer eye." If it was "straight eye for the straight guy" it would lack the charm of "queer eye" and it wouldn't be an interesting show. The premise is "let's take an ordinary clueless guy and turn him into someone we'd date." Or if it was "dyke eye for the straight guy" nobody would buy into it for similar reasons.

So "gay eye for the straight girl" similarly is suspect, IMHO.

46. Not to stereotype, but I will stereotype a little, Marilyn Monroe
There's an example of a quasi-gay icon who certainly isn't a waif and certainly was feminine.

I hope I am not hopelessly out of date thinking she is a quasi-icon, maybe I shouldn't base my beliefs on Elton John songs, but I could have sworn that the NYT story about youong gays not buying into the traditional gay pantheon (Judy Garland, et al) included Marilyn in that group.

48. Don't blame gay men for that...
In my opinion, the trend towards skinny waif models are the product of the strictly aesthetic trend of starving women to wrap them in less and less fabric! Long skinny limbs tend to make more dramatic fashion horses, lots of pokey bits (elbows & ribs) shifting under silky fabrics.

Advertising seeks to make a hole in your ego and fill it with their products. To paraphrase Adbusters, your are the product!

But I'm not sure that my judgement is the same as that of your average hetero female. So while I certainly think a gay guy could judge a hot chick, I'm not 100% sure that his judgement would be the same as your average hetero guy.
