Attention Northwest DUers

On Monday I'll be escaping the CA Central Valley heat and the office (and wife and kids) to hop on the Harley and take a cruise up north. I'll have stop-overs in Salem to say hi to an aunt and cousin, then head over to Cascade Locks to see the Gorge. Then it's on to Ft. Lewis to see my semi-adopted son who's scheduled to get shipped out to Iraq by those slimy bastards in February. Next, I'll be visiting a former co-worker who retired and bought a nice place on Puget Sound at Port Orchard. And another long time friend has an office for his ship repair business (it's OK, he's a solid Dem defense contractor) in Port Orchard as well. The highlight of the trip will be going to Port Angeles and taking the ferry to Vancouver Island. I'll take a round trip ride from Victoria to Nanaimo and then hop the ferry back to WA. Then I'll have to start heading south ... slowly.

Are there some non-mainstream attractions of interest near my travel path that you can suggest? I'm one of those riders that likes to stop and smell the roses. This is "my time" and I'm going to enjoy it.

24. If you take the Port Townsend Ferry to Coupeville

You could drive up Whidbey Island and through Deception Pass. Whidbey is developing quickly and tackily, so now is a good time to enjoy it while it lasts.

On Edit: You can get to Vancouver Island from Anacortes by ferry, which is only a few minutes northwest from Deception Pass. Anacortes is a cute city.

4. Take I-84 east at Portland.

Get off at exit 22. Go to the top of the hill (about 2 miles), then left at the Y. You're now on the Columbia River Scenic Hwy. Check out the views from the Vista House, Multnomah Falls, etc. Follow it until you have to get back on I-84. You'll just have a few miles left until you get to Cascade Locks.

much prettier to get off at exit 22 & take the scenic hwy & its not really that much longer-maybe 15 minutes. You can get off at the Falls from I-84 but my way is much prettier & you get to see the fabulous views at the Vista House.

16. Why don't you take the ferry from Victoria to Vancouver instead?

There's lots to see here. You can then drive the Chuckanut drive between the border and Seattle.

I also highly recommend Deception Pass.

Oh, and BTW, the Sea to Sky highway (from Vancouver to Whistler - 99 North if you're going to be picky) is the most beautiful stretch of highway EVER.

and I prefer not to ride at night if I can avoid it. I'm harder to see and my night vision ain't what it used to be.

28. Off I-90 -

about 84 miles east of Seattle, and an hour or so from the Gorge - take the Roslyn exit! Small mining town, has the oldest operating saloon in the state of WA, an AWESOME historical cemetary, just up the road from some beautiful national forest, and they filmed Northern Exposure here.
