1,100 lb tiger shark caught 6 minutes too late to win contest

OAK BLUFFS, Mass. -- It wasn't too little, but it was too late.

Fishermen who hauled in a massive 1,100 pound tiger shark off Massachusetts this past weekend failed to capture first place in the monster shark derby on Martha's Vineyard.

The reason: The boat was six minutes too late in returning to Oak Bluffs harbor with its catch.

The toothy tiger shark may not have won the competition, but it did win the admiration of other fishermen. Steven James of the Boston Big Game Fishing Club said this truly was a monster shark, and one that "could eat you."

2. Well the rules are the rules.
I am sure the guy that "really" won is getting no attention. So in a way, this guy did win.

3. I saw them on the Today Show
They weren't too upset about it-they knew from the minute they saw it that time was going to be tight.

The guy who did the reeling in was using stand-up gear. Pretty damned impressive.

5. That's the nastiest
looking creature I've ever seen.

I know, I know....experts tell us sharks don't have the brain capacity to be "evil"... but you'll NEVER CONVINCE ME!

6. My favorite fish contest story
In the early 1980s, a rod and reel company noticed that the record for a certain type of fish (largemouth bass?) had stood for 80 years, and they came up with the bright idea of holding a contest. They would give away $100,000 and all sorts of prizes to anyone who could break the record, and they spent a fortune on advertising the contest, in-store displays, publicity, etc., expecting that the contest would run for years and years and years and years...

The contest began at noon of a certain day...and four hours after it began, a fisherman landed the new record holder...

7. They should protest!

I think the old fish size to boat speed ratio played a major role in that.

If they return that shark or "shawk" to the waters with a couple of snooty, yet tasty, judges, then try it again, they will come back even slower proving my point.
