you get an invitation to a wedding
it's for your s.o.'s cousin, who you've known for 8+ years, and are on great terms with.

so you get the wedding invitation addressed to "mrs. sniffa + 1 guest"

what the fuck!!!?

shouLd i be offended? shouLd i just suck it up and hope that i get picked to be that guest?

2. I would just suck it up. I remember
when I was doing my invitations, it was just a pain in the ass. It was probably just a slip up or they did it to be easier on them. Just hope Mrs. Sniffa picks you. :P

8. that's my guess
i think it was her parents doing - they're the freakish, fundie cathoLics of the famiLy. i take it as a sLap at our maritaL status - ie: you're not married, so you don't get your own invitation.

7. Yes, you should be offended.
If you've known your s.o's cousin for 8+ years, get along with said cousin wonderfully...you're more than "guest". The invite should have been mailed to mr and mrs sniffa"

But it probably wasn't meant to be. If I were you I'd just slip Mrs. Sniffa a 20 so she'll pick you.

11. From a former wedding planner
Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 09:48 AM by Thtwudbeme
me:

Brides, their mothers, the maids of honor, and the bridesmaids are just plain tacky on some issues. I am leaving men out of that list because quite frankly, "Love Story" was fiction: most men get fitted for their tuxes, drink beer, and show up. Flame me...I don't care.

That is why rich brides hire wedding planners...so they won't make glaringly ugly blunders.

The invitation was TECHNICALLY correct, but socially wrong.

Let it pass...say NOTHING about it, try to forget it....and on the wedding day...no matter what anyone says...your only responses should be "The bride is lovely...." "the weather is _______" "the groom is handsome...." and "My, isn't this just lovely."

Take my advice...I promise you, it's good.

Stephanie

Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 10:22 AM by Gormy Cuss
In fact, pocket the flatware and dishes. One table's worth and you and the Mrs. are all set for dinner parties.

Seriously, the invitation was proper in form but not generous in spirit, so if you like the cousin, it's probably a good concession to ignore the slight and put on a happy face. That is of course IF Mrs. Sniffa happens to choose you as her guest.
:P

26. but social graces are everything
that's why people hire wedding planners. If they can't be bothered to invite me (ok, funny story, last year I was andguested to a friends wedding. Of course, I complained about it (not around the happy couple of course, but with my friends away from the wedding) so this summer my girlfriend's old roommate gets married and she sends me the invitation, andguesting my gf. it was cute because it was a personalised thing. Of course, she mailed it to gf's address with "Mr. northzax and guest" ahh good times)

I advise severe repurcussions for this type of faux pas, violation of social norms is the first step towards anarchy. So sniffa? go, definately. but spill red wine everywhere. then you'll be even.

12. A relative should have known better.
Maybe they forgot your name or even how to spell it! It seems silly. I personally don't think these kinds of things are the reason to start conflicts. I would be hurt, but I would also blow it off.

21. I've had family members put down the wrong name for me
Hardly anybody calls me by my first name in my family and my last name was changed when I was ten so I get some pretty strange invites. I've been called and asked by people what they should put down.

17. Pffffft
I wouldn't fucking go! Food, booze, dancin' and all that crap. I would make a stand and stay home watching reruns that night. Or better yet, buy a frozen meatloaf dinner and a 6 pack of Genesee and have your own wedding bash.

23. Sheeesh
One more thing to worry about. If I ever get married, I'm eloping, or I'm just going to call people.

The wedding business is a big scam designed to make sure you're paranoid about following a bunch of weird requirements that cost a lot of money.

I am constantly perplexed when I get a wedding invitation, and I open the envelope, and there's another damn envelope inside. Then there's that weird piece of tissue-y paper.

Screw it. I'll email people.

24. I don't understand the problem...
...which may be because I don't know you that well, sniffa.

It's my understanding that if a couple is married or engaged, then the invite is addressed to "Mr. and Mrs. Sniffa". If the couple is unmarried, then it's "Mrs. Sniffa and Guest".

Either way, why take offense to semantics?

35. Ah, well, it's all a bunch of "Miss Manners" BS...
I wouldn't get too upset. The bride (or her planner) is just trying to follow the etiquette rules. I was referred to as "Guest" in invites for years.

37. Frankly, this doesn't bode well for your relationship
You might not make the cut. Chances are good that you WILL, but it could be an opportunity on Mrs. Sniffa's part to check out the other guests. You know how it is, people always hook up at weddings.

(and when mrs. sniffa is out of the way, I will pounce, mwahhhh)
