What is the worst food you ever ate?
Mine was some hot, Korean squid shit I had last month. Total waste of money and I will never order it again.

it's supposedly fermented soybeans, but it's really more like rotten soybeans.

it's a lot like the crap you have during cold water maceration, when you put an animal head in water and let it rot in order to get the skull?

grayish, slimy/stringy/lumpy goo, that JUST TASTES BAD. I had to run and spit it out off the front porch, and I basically stood there and retched for a few minutes, then I got some water and gargled and retched some more.

I'm an adventurous eater, and I have a very strong stomach, and this stuff was WRONG. WRONG I TELL YA.

pickled, and they make some good West African-Brazilian dishes with okra. Fried okra rocks. The trick is to de-slime it.

22. nope-- one of my grad students cooked them...
...for an insect cultural history display at a natural history museum. The water bugs were Thai and purchased frozen, and the recipe is pretty simple-- basically just fry and toss with a sauce. They were just nasty.

91. well, they'd be pretty fiddley to eat without eating a bunch of wax...
...at the same time-- the larvae develop inside sealed cells. You can use centrifugal force to get the honey out of honeycomb because it's already liquid, but that wouldn't work for the grubs.

21. Fish/tofu soup at a Korean restaurant.
A friend of mine and I went to this place, it looked like a very nice place, like this is where you'd get the really good Korean.

In fact the food did taste pretty good, relative to other Korean.

But the after-affects. The only way I can describe it, is, it found the root of my soul, and burned, and burned for 3 days. My whole body felt as if it was being tortured at a cellular level.

Have never since set foot in a Korean restaurant.

26. I was in a pub in Portsmouth, England...these people came in
who had been beachcombing and they had a big jar full of saltwater and some type of mussel. They sat at the table next to us and offered us all one. I popped mine in my mouth and as soon as I did, I thought I was going to puke. You know how saltwater tastes when it gets in your mouth? This tasted ten times saltier and the texture of the mussel was disgusting. I had to take the biggest drink of beer to wash that freakin' thing down.

They offered me another but I respectfully declined.

When I was 9, my parents wouldn't let me get up from the table until I ate my slaw. I hated that stuff with a passion and always told them never to serve it to me. I sat there for 4 hours and requested an entire pitcher of Kool Aid to wash it down with.

I was so thin when I left home at 18.

Once I held a sugar beet in my mouth until it turned white. Wouldn't and couldn't swallow it.

I still gag at the scent of them.

Thirty years later, and her cooking has not improved even a little bit. I dread going to her house because she won't stop offering food, and she has no idea what I like or how I like it cooked.

She thinks pepper is an evil tool of Satan. Pepper thinks she is.

Ugh! They stink and they're slimy but they're a favorite of my Dad's, so we had them all the time when I was a kid. He also likes the tinned anchovies in hot sauce, the smell of those makes me want to :puke:

gross! It did not translate into the next day. I am usually a pretty creative and good cook, but one time I made liver & onions (ok) but then I tried to make a cheesy casserole with the leftovers...well we still talk about it ten years later how that was such a culinary mistake. So here are two cautionary tales about leftovers and how they may not work.

I vividly recall the last time I ate eggs. I was sitting in my high chair eating scrambled eggs with ketchup. I was about two and a half. All of a sudden the slimy texture and grease and the *smell* nauseated me, and I have been grossed out by eggs ever since. :puke: Can't stand the smell.

70. No, it certainly isn't pudding as we Americans know it.
Black pudding is actually some sort of Irish blood sausage and white pudding is just plain gross.

I'm not real keen on what purports to be Irish breakfast sausage itself. It has absolutely no taste and bad mouth feel.

67. Pad Thai. Now before you Thai food lovers jump all over me,
listen: Two good friends RAVED about Thai food and took me out for it. They couldn't stop talking about Pad Thai the whole way over to the restaurant. I said "can't wait to try it!" They ordered two platters of it for the three of us. And I sat there shoveling it into my mouth until suddenly I realized, "this is disgusting!"

:shrug: Maybe I'd be willing to try it again someday if I hadn't eaten so much of it before I realized I really didn't like it. But since I ate so much it became just gross and disgusting. :puke:

81. I had a Norwegian uncle
who would eat COLD lutefisk out of the fridge the morning after family feasts. The German side of the family looked on in disgust and horror, with good reason. It is in fact codfish soaked in lye, it smells like an explosion at a chemical plant and has the consistency of fish Jell-O. I never had the nerve to taste the stuff as the stench was enough to put me off my feed for a day or two.

I should point out that my uncle Cliff was my favorite uncle and one hell of a guy despite his culinary eccentricity. And I still really miss him.

I've had Durian in Indonesia that tasted like a mushy, sweet, odiferous garlic - ptui! But then I've had some from Thailand that were deliciously custard-y with a hint of vanilla to 'em - pretty good!

My wife hates the things, though.
