2. My little brother had a dog that did exactly that same thing

Several times. He was part Black Lab and part Rottweiler. Just a born fighter, had lots of heart. What happens is the dog believes it's in a life or death struggle and they have too much heart to just back out of it. It is ingrained in them to fight to the death. Usually, when that happens you just put the dog down. But, we had the vet save him 3 or 4 times. It was every bit as bad as the pictures there. It broke my heart that Penny -the dog's name - wouldn't learn and would keep getting mangled like that.
