I just got informed that I will finally help the IT guy here in the museum. I am a librarian but I am the only one in this house who has an idea of how computers work and what to do with them when they decide not to cooperate :D I am still the librarian here, just when the IT guy is not in the house I will jump in for him when there are major issues with the main server or the colleges have bigger problems. And no, there is no raise money wise. Just will look good on my resumees in case I decide to look for another job.

5. I'm a book lover too

My mother was a librarian and I have a doctorate in history so books are an integral part of my life. My idea of a wonderful time is to sit on the porch at my family's beach house, listen to the surf and escape into a good book. I have so many books that I must dedicate an entire room in my house for them.

Wie ist das Wetter heute in Frankfurt? Hier ist es noch früh und die Temperatur steht um 25 Grad aber gegen Mittag wird es 35 und sonnig. Ich freue mich auf einen schönen Tag am Strand.

20. Ich wohne in Columbia

aber meine Familie hat ein Haus am Strand in Litchfield, ungefähr 400 Kilometer nördlich von Savannah.

Ja ich stimme zu, Halle war langweilig. Aber ich studierte dort von 1992 bis 1994 nach dem Wendepunkt. Die Stadt war noch in der 'DDR-Haltung.' Trotzdem fand ich die Stadt und die Mentalität der Einwohner interresant zu erfahren.

Im Juni war ich in Dänemark (Kopenhagen, Odense und viele kleinen Städte) und auch Deutschland (Flensburg, Hamburg, Schwerin und Berlin). Das Wetter war zum größten Teil stark bewölkt und kalt. Aber ich habe viel Spaß gehabt.

auch noch zu DDR-Zeiten. Ich habe bis 1989 in Leipzig gelebt (bin aber in Jena geboren und habe dort meine ersten sieben Jahre gelebt).

Wenn ich von Savannah nach Charlotte bin (war dort au-pair), bin ich immer an Columbia vorbei.

Viel Spaß am Strand. Ich beneide Dich. Aber in zwei Wochen geht es an die Ostsee, auf Rügen :bounce:

aber ich mage diese Unterteilung eigentlich nicht. Ich bin eine Deutsche, die weltoffen ist.
Es freut mich für Dich, daß Du gute Erfahrungen gemacht hast. Und daß Du von einer Familie adoptiert wurdest. Das hilft sehr viel in einem fremden Land. Wir Deutsche können manchmal etwas grummeling sein.

Die Ostsee ist traumhaft. Als Kind war ich häufig dort. Seitdem aber nicht mehr. So wird es für mich das erste Mal seit Jahren sein, daß ich wieder auf Rügen bin.

Als ich vorher gesagt habe, ich bin Historiker und deswegen mußte ich die DDR forschen. Ich interessere mich für Länder, die nicht mehr existieren und wie die Menschen damals lebten.

Ich weinte als ich den Film 'Goodbye Lenin' ansah, aber ich war der Meinung, daß der Film 'Go Trabi Go' ganz vergnügt (fröhlich??) war. Und auch der Film 'Wie Feuer und Flamme' war sehr interessant. Alles war von der Perspektive eines Historikers.

Mein Bruder hat auch Geschichte studiert, allerdings alte Geschichte und er hat abgebrochen. Er ist jetzt Mitbesitzer eines Modernen Antiquariats.

36. 'Wie Feuer und Flamme' ist ein X Verlieh Film

Der Film beginnt in 1989 als eine Berlinerin, die in NYC ist, sieht am Fernseher die Menschen, die auf der Mauer tanzen und mit Hammern schlagen. Dann erinnert sie sich das Jahr 1982 als sie die Beerdigung ihrer Tante in Ost Berlin. Dann beginnt der Film. Die Heldin des Filmes verliebte sich einen Punk.... Der Film ist über Punks in der DDR und wie sie von der Stasi und anderen Menschen behandelt worden waren. Ein guter, interessanter Film.

Kennst Du das Buch von Uwe Johnsen "Jahrestage" Es ist auch verfilm worden. Geht auch über die Geschichte der DDR.

38. Nein, ich kenne dieses Buch nicht

Aber ich habe ein Paar gute Bücher wie: 'Die Elbe hat es mir gesagt' (Folklore), 'Ossi, benimm Dich!' (Humor), 'Großer Ostprodukte' (Beschreibungen) und 'Wendepunkt: Nach dem Herbst '89' (Erinnerungen).

Heute ist die Temperatur 35-37 Grad vorhergesagt. Bitte, verzeihe mir für meinen Wetterbericht. Es tut mir Leid.

Ich werde diesen Film 'Jahrestage' nachschlagen. (Kann ich das sagen? Oder lautet das komisch?) Oder... Sollte ich sagen: Ich werde nach diesem Film suchen, um darüber herauszufinden. Manchmals fehlt mir die Fähigkeit gut Deutsch zu sprechen.

39. Dein Deutsch ist sehr gut.

Johnsons überwältigende Chronik der deutschen Geschichte, erzählt von Gesine Cresspahl, die aus Mecklenburg über Westdeutschland in New York gelandet ist und dort ihrer Tochter ihre und die Vergangenheit ihrer Familie vor, während und nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg erzählt: Diese Geschichte abgelöst von Johnsons Sprachgewalt wiederzugeben ist ein wirklich mutiges Unterfangen. Wer die 4 Bände der "Jahrestage" gelesen hat, kann sich kaum vorstellen, dass die Erzählungen der Gesine Cresspahl auf sich gestellt ihre Wirkung tun können. Es geht auch einiges verloren: Die Referate aus der "Times", viel Mecklenburgerisches, auch sprachlich, und die einmalige Sprache Uwe Johnsons. Was aber bleibt, ist immer noch genug. Die in Rückblenden aus dem New Yorker Leben in Stücken erzählte Jerichower Chronik entwickelt sich mit all ihren Verwicklungen, Tragödien und politischen Implikationen, die Schauspieler sind ausgezeichnet und die Regisseurin hat ihre Aufgabe hervorragend gelöst. Dass Gesine Cresspahls Tochter allerdings eine frühreife Plage ist, war schon ein Problem des Buches und diese Tatsache hat sich nicht geändert.

und ich habe ein Paar 'posts' (ich weiß nicht das deutsche Wort) von Dir und Du kannst auch gut Englisch. Vorher war ich der Meinung, daß Du Amerikanerin wärst.

Vielleicht können wir uns anfreunden (oder am wenigstens, bekanntmachen). Wir sind ungefähr 6000 Kilometer entfernt, so würde es ganz sicher sein. Ich kenne niemanden hier, der deutsch sprechen kann und dieses Gespräch war ganz angenehm und Spaß. Ich verspreche Dir, daß ich ganz harmlos bin.

Ich habe nur einen Freund, der Deutsch als Muttersprache spricht und der ist Österreicher (Tyroler) und arbeitet in Wien. Wir müssen immer auf englisch sprechen, weil ich ihm nicht verstehen kann (der spricht auf tyrolisch). Die Freunden, die ich in Halle bekanntgemacht und kennengelernt habe, sind verschwunden; alle Kontakte verloren. :-(

my Masters thesis and Doctoral dissertation (LOC: LD5031.82.D59). I do have one entry in a historical dictionary concerning the history of women in the military: "From Amazons to Fighter Pilots". As I can also speak Polish, my entry concerns the activities of the women in the Polish underground. If you get a copy, please keep in mind the editor limited me to 1000 words.

As Ph.D.s in history are 'a dime a dozen', I have been unable to find any work at the university level, so I pay the bills teaching high school German. x(

I've loved books since I was a wee lass of four and learned to read. My entire bedroom looks like a small library and I read like a fiend. Books on tape (or CD) are wonderful also since you can enjoy novels or learn when you aren't able to read (like when you're driving or doing other stuff). I'm also one of those geeks who actually likes school. What can I say?

Me too. I read since I am a kid. My whole family reads so this is how I grew up. I always rather read than played with other kids.

When you come in my apt, I have 2 bookcases in the hall way, a book case in the living room and another one in the bedroom. And I already need to buy me a new one, the other ones are full.

I donate them to my public library, where they are sold to benefit the library system. I buy my share from them, which further contributes to the library which I get so much from. I also buy some books from them and "set them free" through BookCrossing .

The concept is that you read a book, then leave it in some public place (like a coffee shop, train station or wherever) for some interested party to find. They pick it up, read it and do the same. Each reader has the option to keep the book, but the intention is to keep the book travelling. The book has a unique ID# inside the cover so each person who finds it can go to the BookCrossing site, login using the number and read/post comments about the book. Also, the person who originally sent the book on it's way can see where the book has travelled, what comments have been received on it, and any other information readers have posted.
