Anyone ever use that spray foam in a can?
It's great for filling cracks and such, but you have to be careful because it grows after you spray it and can turn into a mess.

Well, I just had an entire can of the stuff explode on my deck! It's everywhere and it's growing as I type. I have no idea how to clean the mess up, if you touch it it's on you until it wears off. I tried wiping it up with newspaper and it just smeared and spread, and then continued to grow. I'm screwed.

This is a mess of cataclysmic proportions.

1. Let it harden, and then scrape it off.
Once it dries it gets brittle and is easier to handle.

15. Tell me about it
It just blew up too. I left it sitting in the sun when I left this morning and came home and it was everywhere. Stupid, me.

Thanks for the help. I guess I'll just let it dry and fight it then. It has to be easier than trying to battle it now.

Oh, great, I just noticed that it's also on my tomatoes and my oregano.

How will you make tomato sauce?! This is a tragedy!

 I guess this stuff doesn't like heat, huh? Maybe I should not store my can in the garage.

8. It'll probably come off pretty cleanly, but a little might remain.
A light sanding would take care of it at worst.

Edited on Fri Jul-22-05 03:29 PM by tk2kewl
but i would get a wide metal spackle knife and try to scrape it off after its hard.

BTW sometimes its hard on the outside but not on the inside so give it a while.

The smear looks pretty ground in. I may have to use the acetone and restain that portion of the deck.

6. GOPisEvil is correct... But, the solvent for the foam should be listed on
the can. (Or one like it)

It's usually mineral spirits or in some cases acetone.

http://greatstuff.dow.com/greatstuff/pro/faq.htm

Which is also listed under "Bad Corporation" ... Needless to say.

There *is* no solvent for it after it has dried.

Cept for elbow grease and sand paper.

11. Oh what a mess
There's probably something that will work -- but it's probably toxic.

My husband just used this to fill a void in the ice box on our sailboat (note wind power driven). The remainder of the can was used to fill a box -- since once used the stuff hardens in the nozzle.

He is using an epoxy paint next to the foam in the ice box and he says that the epoxy is reacting with the foam and shrinking it. However, I don't think that chemical reaction would be at all useful in the disaster on your deck.

Seems like you'll have to wait until the stuff dries and then scrap off the bits by hand.

But only on the things that I was afraid it wouldn't come off of. The rest can just dry up and I'll scrap it off later.

Edited on Fri Jul-22-05 03:34 PM by UTUSN
I used it to fill in a fairly wide crack, then set aside the can, where it has been for months. Sounds like I should throw it away.

The excess in the crack in the window sill was O.K. for it to expand, filling up the spaces in the old, shrunken insulation.

I sat the can there when I left this morning and didn't take into consideration that it would be in full most of the day. The only thing I can think of is heat from the sun made it blow. I really don't know for sure.

I made the mistake once of thinking I could use a little and save the rest for later. Once the stuff started flowing it wouldn't stop. I had to put the can in a garbage bag and let it run out.

22. I hope it wasn't the stuff in the red can...
I use the stuff all the time (I'm in construction) red can = bad news,
buy one of the other brands. I've got it on my hands before and had to wait about 3 days and 400 washings to get it off. The others pretty much like everone else says, let it dry and scrape/cut it off.

That is undoubtedly one of most tenacious substances known to man.If it's on the deck you'll probably need some utility knife blades, A 6" drywall knife, sandpaper, and a 12 pack of beer. Good luck.

41. Bad news: There is no solvent that will remove cured polyurethane foam
Edited on Fri Jul-22-05 04:56 PM by CottonBear
and it won't come off your skin once cured either. They suggest sandblasting and repainting to remove it from your house.
:( :scared: From the web site FAQ:

How do I get foam off of my skin?

If the foam has not cured or hardened, use acetone or fingernail polish remover (with acetone). If the foam has hardened, there is no solvent that will remove it. It will not harm your skin and will wear off in several days. To remove cured foam from skin, use a pumice stone (available at most drug stores) and warm, soapy water. Then apply petroleum jelly.

How do I get foam off the side of my house?

There is no solvent that will remove cured polyurethane foam. Remove as much as possible with a dull scraper or a hacksaw blade and then try scrubbing the remaining film with a non-abrasive cleaner. If that does not work, gradually move up to more aggressive means including sanding, sandblasting and repainting.
