1. Longing for grits

but my wife has me on a low carb regimin. All other hot cereals pale.
Cream of wheat used to be served to slaves on the passage from Africa.
There is a bad connotation there... I don't suppose grits is any different but I would not turn away a serving or two.

I don't even add milk to cold cereal - too mushy. My current favorite is Kashi's Strawberry Fields. Crunchy and yummy! :)

Cold cereals are the modern upstart of the cereal family. Don't get me wrong...I love 'em.

But come cold weather...cold cereal loses its allure.

Cold weather in Houston, is, er, not cold. Mostly.

(I still wouldn't eat hot cereal when I lived in Canada, though. :))

And since I don't eat breakfast all that often (more likely to have cereal as a snack), I'll warm up with a hot chocolate instead.

I'm a lover of hot cereal anyway. I love oatmeal and cream of wheat and we used to eat this stuff called Maypo when I was a kid that had a maple flavor to it. But Maltex was always my favorite though I haven't had it in years. I wonder if they still make it.

30. OATMEAL RULES! I love the stuff and I eat it at least 5 times a

week. I buy Silver Palate's "Thick and Rough" which is quite hearty and satisfying. If I can't get that, then I buy Quaker Old Fashioned.

The slow cooking kinds are the best. I have not tried the Irish Oatmeal in the can yet, however..it is even pricier than the Thick and Rough.

I cook it in the microwave while I am doing my shower etc. and I put brown sugar and extra light olive oil, and some salt of course. It is yummy, filling, and good for the cholesterol too.

Cream of Wheat and Cream of Rice are lovely to eat and I enjoy them on occasion.

I used to love Ralston, a sort of whole wheat hot cereal, which I can't seem to find anymore.

I don't like grits as a cereal, I do like them on the plate with fried eggs etc. but the best way of all to eat grits is in a cheese grits souffle!!!!!!!!!!!! Garlic, cayenne pepper, cheddar cheese, eggs, butter and cooked grits. Baked in the oven until it is golden brown and puffy from the eggs. YUM YUM YUM

36. Irish Oatmeal in a can

Isn't exactly oatmeal, it's Irish porridge. The oats aren't rolled, they are steel cut. It takes about forty minutes to prepare, and is much better than plain oatmeal, especially with buttermilk, or, if you don't like milk, with soymilk curdled with a tablespoon of vinegar (It's a good cooking substitute for buttermilk in just about everything.)

I agree with you on Silver Palate. I also buy Bob's Red Mill. I give the Quaker stuff to my kids because it's cheaper and they don't know any better.

But it has no real flavor compared to grits. Irish porridge is closer to grits, actually, than regular oatmeal. I think it's because the oats aren't mushed flat, they are chopped, the way grits are, so they still have some flavor.

77. I don't think grits have all that much flavor on their own. They

are just ground up hominy anyway. Bob's Red Mill is the "house brand" in Central Market's bulk foods area, and I do buy that sometimes but I like the Silver Palate better, partly because it has much more body than the Red Mill.

So versatile, and healthy. I like a smattering of turbinado sugar and skim milk with it. But apples, bananas, or raisins on it are also good.
