1. F-86.

Dominated the skies over Korea. MiG 15 a close second.

F-84 was largely a target/ground striker. F-100 and F-102 didn't see much (any?) actual action.

The wing and tail designs are just like Kurt Tanks last Focke Wulf fighter design.

AV-8 Harriers, and F-18 Hornets are the most common.
But this is about 1950's jets, so they should be F9F Panthers and F9F-2 Cougers.

the field of contemporaneous aviation is more than wide open, go to the poster who wondered "what the marines fly 'period' " and post your query perhaps they'll be willing to assist you; also note the lack of a qualifier in the question i.e. "fly" vs "did fly" and such...just a thought ~ good luck

My book didn't have that in there. was that late 50s? The book I was using is Aircraft Recognition for the Ground Observer. Used during Operation Skywatch.

Then there is the F16--Chinese F10--Lavi. I guess function makes for similarity's in the designs. i agree that the planes from the fifties somehow look more romantic.
