Compaq PCs - WHY do they have a light by the power connector and yet
none of their manuals or ANY documentation explains what the heck it means when the little light starts flashing?!

Wretched Compaq... (now HP but it's obvious HP didn't clean up what it had bought.)

2. Most likely it's a hard drive activity light.
Anytime the drive is accessed, whether to get a file or the OS doing housing keeping the light will flash.

4. No, this light is just underneath the power cord connector.

The compaq website, whose documentation and support totally lack coverage for the LED, actually show this LED in a screengrab.

3. Well, I have an HP and that light flashes when it goes into sleep
mode. I think it's just telling you that the computer is on, even though the screen is blank.

5. I told that to my client as well, but it didn't wake up. Even after unplug
and re-plugging in the PC after 1 minute didn't help. (the power supply fan was never running; hitting the power button did nothing to restore; and unplugging it would end sleep mode as that is quite dfferent from 'hibernation'.)

It started by an accidental kick of the PC... but unplugging it should have nixed the power save problem entirely; if it was power save.
