1. Only read one sherlock & a few short stories. Interesting because

of the historical context. Not that I ever would have wanted to live in Victoria England. But fascinating in more ways than just the stories.

Somerset Maugham too.

4. Sam Spade
Whether in the Dashiell Hammett books or as brought to life by the great Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon. I also like the French Inspecteur Maigret from the Georges Simenon novels and also as appearing in many French films based on that famous police detective.

9. Rumpole of the Bailey!
Not so much a sleuth, as clever barrister. As played by Leo McKern (no one else could have done it)... I adore Rumpole.

Miss Marple's cool, too -- best done by Jane Hickman

Sherlock best done by Jeremy Brett

Inspector Morse best done by John Thaw

Sadly, all of these wonderful actors are now dead.

11. I voted "other"
...since my current favorite, at least, is John Connelly's Charlie Parker. If you haven't read EVERY DEAD THING, the first in the series, then you're missing out.

12. Philip Marlowe
Raymond Chandler's great creation, based in post-WW2 Los Angeles.

Although I cast a sentimental vote for another L.A. favorite, Jim Rockford. I just love the hell out of James Garner. He is the essence of all that is good and cool in the world.

14. The Rockford Files is one of my favorite all-time TV shows
The screenwriting on that show was top notch. I managed to tape most of the episodes and watch them from time to time. Angel was a fantastic character. And I loved the fact that Jim Rockford had a touch of larceny in his soul, despite being a good guy, particularly obvious in some of the elaborate scams they ran on the bad guys which occurred in my favorite episodes.

19. Well, Rockford was a reformed con
So who else would be better suited to getting inside the mind of a perp? :D

I liked the realism... when he hit someone, it hurt him too. And you gotta love the different answering machine massages at the beginning of each show.

20. DC Tennyson, of course. Jim Rocford a close second, especially...
that one episode where he got cracked on the skull by a bad guy.

Oh, wait... that was every episode.
