Enough with the Lance....

I have a feeling I might be alone in this view, but I am SICK of Lance Armstrong.

I don't care how fast he pedals his bicycle up the hills in France, and I don't care how many times he does it. I don't care about the size of his heart (literally or figuratively), or who he is married to. I just don't care.

AND, I have always been bothered that his name sounds like an action figure or an adult film actor, but that is beside the point.

I am sure people will say that he is an example of courage, strength, etc. And that he is America personified. I understand that and I still don't care.

I am hopeful that he will be relegated to Gatorade and deodorant commercials, just like Andre Agassi.

3. I like Armstrong. I think America should always be reminded that hard work

has its reward.

Armstrong didn't get where he was because of who his father was. Of course, there are some accidents of birth involved. But I'm sure there are many others physically capable of what he does, but don't work as hard as Armstrong does (especially considering the way he fought back from cancer).

He's winning those races because he works harder than anyone else and Americans need to know that that's still possible.

I also think it'd be great if all international conflict could be channeled through sport rather than through violence and economic oppression.

And I think his cameo in Dodgeball is one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life.

he is out now with an injury. Perhaps if you looked into the good deeds these two men have done, and their charities you might feel better. I have no love for sports figures just because they are good at ball or whatever but judge them by their good works. Both of these men have done much for their communities and charities.

I don't think we should admire and worship sport figures but if you look at what Lance has done it is amazing and should be motivation to everyone.

And as far as sports figures go you have to admire him, he never whined or didn't compete cause they didn't pay him enough, he is always a gracious and respectful competitor (but that is true among all of cycling). If leader crashes by freak accident during the race his other competitors will slow down so they can rejoin the group. No cyclist wants to win over a stupid accident.

Plus Lance's charities have donated millions of dollars into research for a cure to cancer.

My point is that for seven years I have endured Lance and his Pedals of Death and I am glad it's over.

And, I will add, I fully expected people to disagree with me. Although from people responses, you would have thought I crapped on a picture of Dale Earnhart at a Bush rally.

He is just an athlete. His 'hard work' is nothing compared to the hard work that your kids teachers do. Or the guys in 114 degree heat fixing our roads do. Those are things that (to me) deserve adulation.

Not Lance.

it's not Lance himself, I think his accomplishment is great.

It's how he'll be treated, he'll be hyped as the Second Coming before long, and he's only one man who's done something great.

We choose to recognize some people who have done great things, and others get next to little or no recognition. :)

Including Lance. There are different facets of life that different people fulfill. All these facets are important. I think your disdain for sports is obvious, but I would remind you sports do have a deserved place in society and this country's culture. While I'd agree we all think athletes are paid too much, or get too much attention... it doesn't mean we have to discredit those (Like Lance) who do excel in sports.

I love competitive sports. I will even sit though an entire Colorado Rockies baseball game (urghh) because i enjoy the competition. There is just something specifically about Armstrong that rubs me the wrong way. Probably something in my past (ridiculed by a man in spandex maybe).

32. Lance is one of the few things America has to be proud of right now...

I do not get into jingoisitic displays of national pride, but I have to admit that when I was in Paris 2 years ago (my visit there coincided with the end of the Tour de France), I had a definite lump in my throat when he zoomed by on his bike and there were a sea of people - Americans and other nationalities - cheering him on and waving small American flags. He's about what's GOOD about our country. And it's okay that you don't care, as long as you don't have a problem with those of us who do. :-)
