44. That's a pretty good definition. You can see by all the qualifiers in the

posts on this thread that there are no objective criteria for what "country" music is, although the corporate masters have pretty successfully hijacked the genre and sold to the masses a mawkish and treacly product wrapped in endorsements and action figures.

"Bluegrass," or old-time southern string music, probably comes closest to the true definition of country music, just because it's not corrupted with drums and electric instruments that were not found in the country. However, citybillies have always loved the electric twang, just as they have loved Nudie suits and the celebrity awareness that accompanies pop culture.

The great mass audience for "country" has always clamored for the elements of pop rather than Art, so that the ineffable brilliance of Lefty Frizzell or George Jones or Townes Van Zandt will always be lost deep beneath the surface of whatever passes for country music.

Sure, there is plenty of country music that I don't like, and there seems to be more of it that I don't like from the last few years. But there are some great artists and great songs from all eras. I think this is true for pretty much any type of music, and I think people should keep their mind open to this.

26. There are some great C&W performers and songs...

but too many acts today are putting out badly-written straight-ahead rock with fiddles and steel guitars thrown in for effect. Maybe the worst is the emergence of Kid Rock as a Country 'Star'.

Right now, country music is a confused mish-mash of Shania Twain pop, Toby Keith singalong propaganda, and scads of Babes and Pretty Boys parading around trying to be popular. There are still a few real performers out there, but they have been paying the price for Garth Brooks' influence for two decades.

Let's hope C&W gets a few more Clint Blacks, Dwight Yokums, Dixie Chicks, and Brad Paisleys.

I like old-timey--that's pre-Bluegrass. The Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers & ragged rounders like Charlie Poole. Too many modern Bluegrass players concentrate on how many notes they can pick rather than soulfulness. But some are fine.

Western Swing rules--from Bob Wills & the other originators to Asleep at the Wheel & modern players.

Twang? Are Hank Williams Sr, Floyd Tillman & Lefty Frizzell twangy enough for you? Even the slickest countrypolitan arrangement can't hide George Jones's roots. The Bakersfield gang fits in here somewhere--Buck & the Buckaroos in their prime, Merle Haggard any time.

Then we've got the country rockers--Gram & the guys who managed NOT to OD. And the folkies who went to Nashville. And the Nashville guys who came back to Austin. (Yes, I survived the Cosmic Cowboy era--the concert on the attached poster was in benefit of Houston's Pacifica station.)

It's funny that the biggest influences on Country music in the past 30 years were Elvis and the Eagles, both rock acts.

Additionally ironic that one of the biggest influences on rock in the past 30 was Johnny Cash, a Country act.
