EASTHAMPTON, Mass. - If you're driving in Easthampton, Mass., you might think you were somewhere else. Like the Heart of Dixie.
The state highway signs in the Yankee town have the outline of the state of Alabama. The mistaken signs in the Easthampton area went up about a week ago.
Officials don't know exactly what happened, but they have a theory. They believe a contractor was following the federal highway manual, which uses an Alabama sign as an example of what a route marker should look like.
In Massachusetts, state routes are marked with simple black numbers on a white background. Officials say the signs will be replaced as soon as possible.
