What is the worst band to be a fan of?
Edited on Wed Jul-27-05 06:06 PM by coloradodem2005
I would have to say Van Halen. Especially after Hagar Joined. THe original was cool. Van Hagar was ok at best and VHIII was horrible. But Van Hagar was nothing compared to classic Van Halen. And then with the band going under with only rumors of a Roth reunion to feed the fires of the band, then in reality a Hagar reunion with 3 really bad songs and a bad tour. No DVD's or live albums from the original era, which most people like.

4. I said BANDS.
In order to be a band, they have to play instruments. They don't qualify.

they do their thing. there's much worse out there. they keep pushing their sound and trying new things and take on great causes. if only most bands had the integrity they had...

sure, bono has an ego-but he's a fuckin' rock star. what do you expect? he's also very self-deprecating, too.

and the haters always lose me when they start quoting the self-absorbed steroid poster boy henry rollins in their criticisms

i love 'em up til 1997, but it's hard to be a fan after these last three albums. we miss bill and we can only kinda smile and pretend we're still having fun when michael and the boys put out another berry-less mediocrity.

The minute Scott Litt got in there and started overproducing, that was it for me.

My first exposure was 1984 when Reckoning came out (I heard one song on the radio- in San Antonio, if you can believe that. they didn't play that stuff even back then), but I wasn't that crazy about "South Central Rain."

A year later, when "Fables of the Reconstruction" came out, I was 19 and working at a Sound Warehouse store in Austin, so fell in love with "Feeling Gravity's Pull", "Driver 8", etc.

Got into the other albums shortly after that. Aaahh college memories.

I loved South Central Rain--all of Reckoning really when I heard it. And Fables of the Reconstruction! Gravity's Pull and Driver 8 are such great songs. And frickin' Chronic Town--so good. Man, was I ever a nerd for that band.

Ahh, precious retro-active appreciation Junior High/High School memories. :)

Man, you're old! Kidding. I saw it was your b-day yesterday and thought i would give you a tweak.

If you were in college in the mid-80's, you're a young'un.

Me, i'm not the biggest REM fan. OK, by me. They just don't do it for me.

Yeah, my aunt always teased me about being a youngin. It's nice to be able to dish it out a little instead of just taking it!

Of course, by dishing it out, that actually means that I'm OLD, which isn't that great either.

Like I said, I like the old stuff, but haven't gotten into anything of theirs (except perhaps Shiny Happy People) since the late 80s.

What does the Professor like?

70. Well, I'll Give You A Top 10 List
Talking rock/pop only. I'm a jazz guy, too, but bop, hard bop, and postbop, mostly.

These aren't in any order.

1) Joe Satriani
2) The Talking Heads
3) King Crimson (From Discipline forward)
4) The Fixx
5) Utopia
6) The Police
7) Oingo Boingo
8) Deep Purple (from back in the day)
9) Yes (ibid)
10) David Bowie

That's what did it for me, and still does.

Anybody who has Todd and the boys rating in their Top 10 is OK by me! My favorites are Oblivion and POV, and I love the last Tubes stuff that Todd produced, especially Love Bomb. I saw him on the Nearly Human tour, with the cool gospel choir backing him up. AND got an auto-giraffe.

And "Sartori in Tangier" is my favorite King Crimson song. When reprehensor found that out, he told me his adoration of me was complete.

74. My Drummer Saw The A Capella Tour
24 (i think) people needed to do it. All voices. I've got a DVD of the Utopia reunion in Tokyo. It's incredibly good. And it's got warts and all. Mistakes by every member of the band somewhere (not bad ones, but still there, and i'm sure they heard them).

My band did a lot of Utopia covers. As a three piece, we do "I Saw The Light". We sort of arranged it like a solo piano piece, with the guitar player doing the right hand and me on bass playing the left hand. Fun song and gets wonderful recognition. My guitar player is a Todd fanatic. Has been for 3 decades.

I went to Fry Street fair in Denton a few years ago (springtime ritual in my alma mater town) with a friend of mine, and there was a busker on the street doing varied fun tunes.

When he broke into "Couldn't I Just Tell You", I joined him, and we yelled the rest of the song at the top of our (really amazingly inebriated) lungs.

My friend was trying to pretend like she didn't know me. The guy was tickled! We had a great time. I even got him a few extra coins in his hat. Guess it was the sideshow aspect that got em.

PS- I have the CD for A Capella, does that count? :D

Yes, some critics and fans of the old R.E.M. will never be satisfied with the new stuff, but it's a small part of their total output. Personally, I like the last three. They need to rock more on the next one, though.

44. Whether you love them or hate them it sucks to be a fan of U2 because
they're so popular. Unless you're incredibly lucky, you're always going to have to see them in some giant arena with 20,000 other people, you're always going to have to pay huges prices and scramble for tickets. You're never going to be able to find them after the show and chat with them (unless you're an industry insider or incredibly lucky).

My favorite musician is Neil Finn. And, as much as I think he deserves so much more attention and a much larger following, I love that I can see him play at intimate little venues with reasonable ticket prices. I love that I can get into the front row without much difficulty. I love that I have met and chatted with him a few times. I love that he actually banters with the crowd at shows and plays requests on occasion. I even got to see him during his soundcheck a couple of times and he asked what I wanted to hear, and he played it for me. My favorite song of his, just him and a piano. I felt like I'd died and gone to heaven.

Anyway, I feel so spoiled by how fun it is to be a fan of Neil Finn that I just have no desire to ever see a band at giant arena ever again.

about music leading to violence and I don't remember it all that well but I think it went roughly like this:

Guy 1: Do you think it's true music can make people violent?

Guy 2: You know, I think it's true. For instance, listening to Nickelback makes me want to kill Nickleback

Their debut album is actually a great album, too, even though I'm sick of a few of the singles myself. The follow-ups haven't been as good, though they're still not horrible, and I think 3EB are a much better band than their reputation gives them credit for. I think people who hate them based on a couple singles should give the debut album a couple of listens and see if they still feel the same way about them.

24. It's bad to be a fan of any band that is super-popular
Edited on Wed Jul-27-05 06:51 PM by IntravenousDemilo
For one thing, who wants to like what everyone else likes? About 19 out of every 20 people have truly awful taste.

For another, if the band is obscure, it's probably still got some artistic integrity. Once fame hits, some agent or producer or whatever is going to want to homogenize the sound so it will suit the general public, which -- remember -- is represented by that 19 out of 20 people with truly awful taste.

Usually when I'm fond of a band's music, I tend to lose interest once it becomes popular. It's just not "my" discovery anymore; now I have to share! Dammit!

107. Sure
It's still pop music, but it's in a much much better crafted way. And it's less sugary. I think people would like it if they gave it a chance.

off This Time Around (2nd studio release):
Song To Sing
In The City
This Time Around

off Underneath (3rd studio release)
Penny & Me
Get Up and Go

you can see their raw, acoustic talent off of Underneath Acoustic:
When You're Gone
Love Somebody to Know

80. They aren't bands,
But I can't STAND the "rappers" today, who rap slower than I talk. Every once and a while when I'm channel surfing in my car it'll pause on the hip-hop station for a 1/2 second, just long enough for me to know the words to every hip-hop/rap song written in the last few years, and it goes something like this:

"In the club wit a half naked ho..."
Blah blah blah...
"Drinkin' cristal..."
Blah blah blah
"Rollin' in my escalade wit my homies"
blah blah blah
"Bitch is goin back to my place..."
And then something about money and big asses.

Look, I wrote a hip-hop song!!!!! Please pay me millions.

Especially if you are an Axl nutswinger expecting an album for the past 10 years that is never going to come out. When they decided to tour the jerkoff caused riots and just flat out refused to play. If you are a fan of this clown (the band has been done since Izzy left) you must be a masochist.

Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 04:27 PM by last_texas_dem
Soul Asylum- because even though they are a great band who did all kinds of cool music, hardly anyone remembers them for anything besides "Runaway Train" and maybe "Misery"

Hall and Oates- because even though they did a lot of great music in various styles, especially during the seventies, nobody remembers them for anything but their catchy and cheesy megahits in the eighties

Bread/ the Association- because even though they did a lot of innovative pop/rock music, most people just remember them as wimp-rock hacks

Styx- because they are one of many (predominately) seventies "corporate rock" bands who everyone makes fun of even if they don't know shit by them or about them

Chicago- because they had that unfortunate drift into ultra-slick, ultra-cheesy (but sometimes still quite listenable) eighties power ballads
