My mother told me he also still tells her in secret that he thinks it's a "phase" I'm going through, since I don't "really act like a gay guy."

Actually it was a bit more elaborate.

He said that you can't claim to be Gay™® until you're in your 30s and have been living openly as a Gay Man™® or Lesbian™® since your early 20s.

Now...how he came to this perfect Gay Equation™®...I'll never know...

This was a shocker coming from my father, who is not only transgendered and beginning to live his life as the female he apparently always was...but he's had gay friends since forever and I'm named after my parents best mutual gay male friend...

Does "gay" refer more to community than to individual? I mean suppose you have someone who for all outward appearances is heterosexual except for in the bedroom where they prefer homosexual sex. Suppose this person went so far as to disdain homosexuals publicly. They would definitely be homosexual but would that person be considered "gay" or part of the "gay" community?
