The starving child in Niger thread reminds me of a quandry I've long had.

There is Niger in Africa and then another country called Nigeria. People from Nigeria are Nigerians. I'm people from Niger are Nigeriens, but one would think that Nigeriens would be from Nigerie, similar to the quip that Canadians should rightfully be from a land called Canadia and those from Canada should be Canadans. Back to Niger, Nigeriens is an odd choice of names because unless one concentrates closely on the pronunciation it sounds an awful lot like the name of their neighbors the Nigerians. Any thoughts?

As they speak French (to the extent that they speak a European language) and the Nigerians English (to the extent that they speak a European language), I'd imagine the confusion would be minimal.
