looks like the pink floyd reunion honeymoon is over
from waters' interview on the rolling stone website:

What other band would you have liked to play bass in?

What's always great is playing the blues.

Twelve-bar blues, straight up. Nothing better than that. When Eric was in my band, back in '85, we'd play the blues during soundcheck. In Pink Floyd I was being savaged -- because Dave and Rick were kind of insecure, they'd always try to attack me, saying I sang out of tune or I couldn't really play. I said something about that to Eric, and he said, "Are you fucking crazy? You're a great bass player." I went, "Oh, yeah, maybe I am." I would be totally happy to be standing at the back of a stage playing the blues hour after hour.... I enjoyed playing bass .

It looked like you were having the time of your life.

It was more fun than I can remember having with Pink Floyd twenty-five years ago. When we did The Wall, we'd have four Winnebagos parked in a circle, with all the doors facing away from the circle. It was really, really bad. Everybody was kind of jealous -- definitely Dave. He was so pissed off that I was writing everything and doing all the work. He wanted to be that person, but he wasn't. But at Live 8 everything was easy. I was there to enjoy myself.

How do you think Dave felt?

He did send me an e-mail afterward, saying, "Hi, Rog, I'm glad you made that phone call. It was fun, wasn't it?" So he obviously had fun.

Can you think of a better band name than Pink Floyd?

Brand name or band name? It's a great brand name. Dave and Rick did tours and made huge fortunes. I've seen videos of those tours. With all due respect, it was sort of muck.

2. Hmmmmmmmmm! The way I remember it was that Waters
wanted total control of all the music and cut the others out of any creative input. It started like this with "Dark Side of the Moon" where Waters name began to dominate the music until "The Wall" where he practically wrote everything and then "kicked" out Mason and Wright. The three have had no problem working together without Waters. Nuf said. Have they created music as good? Probably not although "Division Bell" was pretty good. Have their live performances suffered? No. And I've seen all the tours since 1974 except for "The Wall" tour. Waters' work has been excellent without the others and I could care less to see them all together one more time. If looks could kill, Mason seemed like he was pissed at Rogers throughout the Live 8 show and who needs that for two hours?

4. Massive, gravity-warping egos in that band
Excepting Nick Mason, who seems somewhat normal.

5. link to the interview?
I'm not too surprised. He is being truthful after all. The tours in '87 and '94 (i saw both) pale in comparison to the floyd tours of the 70's

It's hard to not have huge egos when you're one of the greatest bands of all time.

7. Waters is an ass...........
Edited on Fri Jul-29-05 03:39 PM by CrownPrinceBandar
He had a unique opportunity to mend fences (at least publicly) with the remainder of the band at Live8, but he squandered it for the sake of his own ego and vitriol. Whatever happened to being gracious for a good cause?

Go on, Rog, flounder in obscurity and keep firing off your bellicose ramblings. It SO fits your idiom.

13. Word. As much as I love Waters, he needs to get over himself.
Gilmour has always seemed like the more laid-back, cool genius of the band. Waters, albeit a genius as well, is just way too stuck on himself. Vocally, the guy couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, though lyrically, he's phenomenal. I wish he could be like William Shatner and accept that there's a niche in his life that he fits into spectacularly, and that he should just appreciate that. But he's an even bigger egotist than Shatner, so I guess there's no hope for him.

In the meantime, Dave Gilmour has demonstrated repeatedly that he's a straight-up guy.

14. Glimour is my guitar god.................
Edited on Fri Jul-29-05 04:05 PM by CrownPrinceBandar
ever since I heard the solo to "Sheep" on Animals, I was hooked. He uses such tasteful phrasings in his solos that I am blown away time and again.

Waters is a genius songwriter. He was able to tap into the pain and fear of his youth and turn them into hit songs. But, with the break-up of PF, we all saw that his writing prowess could only carry him so far. I thought that The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking was classic. However after that, I think the lack of raw musicianship shown through. He just didn't have the musical stones to carry off hits anymore. As far as Waters singing talent goes, he sounded like SHIT at Live8. His voice was weak and unstable. I actually felt bad for the guy

10. Well, Duh!
Waters has a major ego problem and has had for years. Any reunion was bound to be short-lived.

11. no Floyd tour BUT Gilmour is touring next year
http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/news/0507132.html

"It wouldn't be absolutely impossible for a similar thing to happen again on a one-off basis, but that's it for me - I've moved on in the last 20 years."

Talk then turns to David's solo album, which we reported some time ago is currently being worked on. "I'm in the middle of making a record, which will be out under my own name in the new year, and I'm doing a few dates to support that."

I'll take what I can get. Realistically "pretty amicable terms" is the best we could've hoped for from them. They shouldn't risk ruining that magic by trying a tour in their golden years. I'll always cherish their part of music history and we'll always have the CDs, videos, & bootlegs.

They didn't do anything near as cool as Arnold Layne or Lucifer Sam after Syd left. Still some good stuff in the later period, though.
