Quorn and Morning Star. Quorn isn't a tofu dog, though.

20. Morningstar Farms is THE BEST.
I love all their products - as someone who ate meat my whole life until the last few years when I became veg, I find their stuff very appetizing and the texture is wonderful. I make veg tacos with their fake ground beef (my absolute favorite) and love their fake Parmesan Ranch fake chik'n patties.

Quorn's Naked Cutlets and fake Roast are awesome as well. The Roast is especially good when you season it up and slice it for sandwiches. Yummy!! :)

I had only seen the regular-sized corndogs, but just last week I saw the minis at my grocery store. I think maybe they weren't selling well, because a few years ago I remember seeing them a lot and not so much anymore. They were excellent.

I'll have to try the Tofurkey sausage...I've never actually tried the Morningstar sausage yet either - have you tried it? Any good?

13. In college, a PETA activist got himself elected Student Food Coordinator
He ran unopposed. Nobody saw the danger.

He used his new position to unilaterally replace all our regular hamburgers and hotdogs with tofu hamburgers and hotdogs. While these tofu variations weren't all that bad, the whole thing smacked of quasi-facism to the entire student body. Eventually, the regular hamburgers and hotdogs got served alongside their tofu counterparts.

And am I the only person who thinks there's something REALLY fucked-up about vegetarian foods mimicking meat? I mean, what's the point of becoming a vegetarian or vegan if you're going to eat something that's identical in form and as close as artificial flavouring can get it to the stuff you won't eat anymore?

23. Well, as a veg I can tell you...
Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 11:31 PM by friesianrider
That I ate meat for 18 years until I found myself a veg 4 years ago due to the moral and health issues that come along with eating meat. I won't lie - it is hard to switch when you've been brought up eating hamburgers, hot dogs, steaks, chicken breasts, and turkey. I love the taste of most meat but won't eat it for moral reasons.

Getting vegetarian food that mimics food we've eaten all our life allows us to not only make the switch easier, but for me personally, it helps at family and social events. I can eat a "hot dog" or "hamburger" like everyone else.

I think very few vegs were brought up as vegs, so naturally we have a craving for food that we had growing up. Fake hamburgers, hot dogs, et cetera helps ease the switch is all. I suppose if you never tasted a real hamburger or hot dog your entire life you probably wouldn't crave a "fake" alternative like I do.

29. You are correct, and thank goodness it's not a hot dog
As for the fake meat thing, vegetarians argue over that, too. Personally, when I'm eating a fake hot dog or burger, I'm not trying to make it taste or feel like a hot dog, I'm just eating it for itself, exploring taste options.

But most vegetarians don't become so because they don't want to taste meat, it's because they have a moral issue, or because they have a health issue, or, most often, both. A tofu dog isn't meat, so you get the improved memory, the improved sexual and physical stamina, and the lower cholesterol, and you still get something that you can load up with mustard and ketchup and veggie chili and soy cheese on sprouted grain bread, and have a good old feast. Face it, when you eat a hotdog, the hotdog is secondary to all the cool stuff you pile on it, anyway.

34. That's very true...
Edited on Fri Jul-29-05 12:26 AM by friesianrider
I basically enjoy eating all the "other" stuff that goes on a fake hot dog or hamburger...or with fake ground beef (tacos, sloppy joes, chili, etc). I feel fortunate to live in a day and age where so many veggie foods are available to me. I know even just a few years ago when I became veg, the veggie foods were very - um - unremarkable. In just a few years so many have become veg for the health benefits that an amazing market has cropped up with very appealing veggie burgers, hot dogs, ground "beef", chicken cutlets, breaded chicken, corn dogs, turkey, roasts, etc. I really enjoy all my veggie foods as do many of my non-veggie friends. I know personally, I like the taste of many kinds of meat, but refuse to eat real meat for moral and health reasons. That's where the imitation tastes and textures are very appealing and quite enjoyable - minus the torture and artery clogging fat ;)

I made vegan tacos the other night and no one knew they were fake. I even made vegan brownies, and everyone thought they were not only real, but from an expensive bakery!

Being a vegetarian is not ANYTHING like the boring eat-food-that-tastes-like-cardboard lifestyle so many think it is!

42. LOL, exactly!
There's really no excuse anymore - there aren't too many real meat foods you CAN'T get in veggie form. Most are quite good too, IMHO, and obviously WAY healthier for your body.

I think it's just an excuse personally. If people want to die from obesity and/or heart disease and/or heart attacks for a Big Mac, who am I to stop them? Just don't expect me to believe the BS arguments "for" meat! :)

25. When was this?
I HATED the first veg products I tried - only a few years ago. You should give some of the new veg stuff a try - many of the new stuff is actually really good, coming from a vegetarian who loves the taste of a lot of meat. Many people in my family are raging carnivores and actually like a lot of the fake meat I get (and they buy it themselves because its healthier for you).

27. I didn't like them
I bought a pack based on some free samples I got at Trader Joes the day before the Super Bowl a few years back...

Whoever cooked those free samples was a good salesperson as well because I bought a pack of tofu dogs even though I don't like hot dogs made the usually way! I'll eat a hot dog maybe twice a year, usually if I attend some sort of circus or carnival...

Anyways I tried grilling one, took a bite or two and through the rest of the package into the garbage. Frankly it was awful! It just didn't cut the mustard. An experience I did not relish.

I went veg about 4 years ago and HATED 99% of fake meat on the market then. In just 4 years, I absolutely LOVE 99% of what is out there today! It's amazing how much tastier veggie foods have gotten in such a short time - I'd imagine because so many people are switching for the health benefits of a vegetarian diet.

Like I said, I like the taste of most meats, so I'm pretty hard to please. The stuff they have out today though is really very, very good and MUCH healthier for you.

35. Interesting and ironic description
Since of course "incarnate" means made flesh, and since generally animals used in the production of hot dogs eat their own feces...

Tofu dogs and Boca burgers aren't supposed to taste like meat. They are just supposed to be a food. If I wanted something to taste like rotting offal, I'd go grab a 'dillo off the road and chow down.
