2. That is nuts. B/c I certainly didn't have a problem reading
that. Although it did get on my nerves since I have a pet peeve against misspelled words!

5. actually they're very anal about phonics and spelling
and the importance of skills and drills and the evils of the "Whole Language" approach to teaching reading and writing.

Spelling is not something to obsess over.

9. So am I.
Everyone makes typos, but there's a spell checker and some words are DEFINITELY misspelled. Some people LOOSE their ability to use that button too.

I hate generalizations. They're too human.

and if they could

they'd take the language back to Chaucerian or West Saxonian/East Anglian.

I always find it amusing that the formal style they like/advocate sounds extremely German when translated to German word for word. (You merely have to realize that all these cutesy Latinate words they use and are so possessive about substitute one-to-one for those infamously long nouns and verbs in German that are compounds.) George Will literally writes in Germanic using Latinate words.

'Real' contemporary American English is not that. It's full of grammatical and syntactic patterns that are IMHO either relics from other immigrant groups or derivatives from (or evolution toward) the emphases found in American Indian languages

But the universities are full of WASPy professors who are gatekeeper conservatives, who insist that 19th century Britishy American English is the One True Language. The code word is 'good writing'- have you ever heard a person who wasn't WASP use it?

6. In that case
why is dyslexia a problem?

Dyslexia is defined, if I understand it correctly, as an inability to correctly perceive the order of symbols in written text. But if the order doesn't matter to the correct interpretation of the word, then the condition as defined shouldn't impede comprehension.

This relates to something I've wondered about for a while. We've discovered a number of neurological conditions that seem to constitute learning disabilities in the last generation or so. Were these conditions as prevalent in previous generations? If not, why not? If so, why does literacy seem to be declining?

10. Wouldn't dyslexia represent the inability of the brain to perform
the functions demonstrated by the freeplish text of the OP?

When I was a child, they thought I might be dyslexic because I mirror wrote words. I grew out of it, but I remember thinking that I did not understand why anyone thought I had a problem, my writing looked fine to me. I have always thought that my brain just processed information differently then than it does now.

8. Much as I am a tried and true DU'er, I have to say
that the spelling on this site tends to be pretty bad. Maybe the Freepers are worse, but we have nothing to brag about..

12. I don't agree
About 85% of the posts here are spelled well, for the most part, another 10% have a few mistakes, and the remaining 5% are just appalling.

Go to FR sometime... they're WAY worse.

13. I see constant misspelling on this site, and, though I
have not counted, I find it very frustrating even if it is only 15%. (I suspect it is more). I just do not buy the argument that says even if we are bad, someone else is worse. That's the logic that brought us Abu Ghraib and Gitmo...

15. I've got some very smart friends
who can't spell. I am accepting of the fact that for some people, spelling just isn't easy.

The misspelling on FR seems to me more indicative of stupidity than just poor spelling ability.

And I have to confess, sometimes I type something and don't read what I typed very carefully and post something that has an error.

It happens to all of us.

16. I make spelling mistakes, too.
I don't mean to be a jerk about this, I just think that there are many good things about the DU, but if I were going to brag, I would not start with spelling.

I look at the Freepers occasionally, and maybe more of the spelling is bad. I just don't think the argument is a strong one.

14. Spelling on this site is excellent.
I think if people think that DU is bad, they should spend some time on average message boards.
