Female Construction Workers
I have to admit, I am feeling a bit old and conservative. Why? Well, because I still can't get used to the sight of seeing female construction workers working on our roads. I know people have to work regardless of what sex they are, and females can do anything men do. It's just that my eyes just have problems adjusting to the sight is all.

How awful, I need to get used it quick and regain all my liberalness to 100%.

:hi:

1. It is just something you aren't used to seeing.
We all need time to get adjusted sometimes!

2. I love it!
I love seeing women doing construction work. It's a good indication of how people have changed.....can you imagine seeing it in the 60's or even in the 70's?

7. Totally, that's when I was raised....
all the coloring books used to have some guy doing the work. Now, you can have anyone doing anything!

4. less now than in the 1970s
Edited on Fri Jul-29-05 10:54 AM by pitohui
i've only seen one female construction worker (roofer) this decade

awhile back i read that female construction workers were actually a declining percentage of work crews

these days the illegal immigrant gets first crack before the woman

to parche -- don't have to imagine it, i saw numbers of female construction workers (road crews, including alaska highway) in the 70s, this was the height of the women's movement

we've given back a lot since those days

8. I was a female construction worker building new homes....most of
the male construction workers looked at me like I was a martian until I held my own and showed them that I could install garage doors just fine, thanks. Oddly, they kept trying to help me with my job.

9. I had major construction done to my house
and had a "mixed" team of contractors - the women paid the most attention to detail, didn't cut corners, and quite frankly did the best work.

10. That's been my experience, too.
When possible, I hire female crews or female owned businesses. Gardeners the same.

12. I worked construction for a few years
On a road crew for two summers and on a carpentry crew working on a large state project (both jobs in Vermont).

I worked with the concrete crew on the road, which is the hardest job out there, working on scaffolding, tying steel, lifting beams, building forms. The guys were great, accepted me immediatly, taught me well and never made exceptions for me - I was expected to pull my weight and I did. No problems with sexist jokes or remarks - I was one of the crew.

I loved it - wish I could still do it but I'm 44 years old and creaky now.
