Let's have some fun......I got 18
A FUN LITTLE TEST

The average person only gets 7 right.
This is based on U.S. info, so use all lobes of your brain.
This can be more difficult than it looks - it just shows
how little most of us really see!

There are 25 questions about things we see every day or have
known about all our lives. How many can you get right? These
little simple questions are harder than you think-- it just
shows you how little we pay attention to all the commonplace
things of life. Put your thinking caps on. No cheating! No
looking around! No getting out of your chair! No using anything
on or in your desk or computer!

Can you beat 20?? (The average is 7) Write down your answers
and check answers (on the bottom) AFTER completing all the
questions.

REMEMBER - NO CHEATING!!! BE HONEST!!! That means not looking
at your phone or anything on your desk... Then, before you pass
this on to your friends, change the number on the subject line
to show how many you got correct. Forward to your friends and
also back to the one who sent it to you.

LET'S JUST SEE HOW OBSERVANT YOU REALLY ARE. - If not, just
have fun! Here we go!

1. On a standard traffic light, is the green on the top or
bottom?

2. How many states are there in the USA? (Don't laugh, some
people don't know)

3. In which hand is the Statue of Liberty's torch?

4. What six colors are on the classic Campbell's soup label?

5. What two numbers on the telephone dial don't have letters
by them?

6. When you walk does your left arm swing with your right or
left leg? (Don't you dare get up to see!)

7. How many matches are in a standard pack?

8. On the United States flag is the top stripe red or white?

9. What is the lowest number on the FM dial?

10. Which way does water go down the drain, counter or
clockwise?

11. Which way does a "no smoking" sign's slash run?

12. How many channels on a VHF TV dial?

13. On which side of a women's blouse are the buttons?

14. Which way do fans rotate?

15. How many sides does a stop sign have?

16. Do books have even-numbered pages on the right or left
side?

17. How many lug nuts are on a standard car wheel?

18. How many sides are there on a standard pencil?

19. Sleepy, Happy, Sneezy, Grumpy, Dopey, Doc. Who's
missing?

20. How many hot dog buns are in a standard package?

21. On which playing card is the card maker's trademark?

22. On which side of a Venetian blind is the cord that
adjusts the opening between the slats?

23. There are 12 buttons on a touch tone phone. What two
symbols bear no digits?

24. How many curves are there in the standard paper clip?

25. Does a merry-go-round turn counter or clockwise?

Go down for the answers.

1. On a standard traffic light, is the green on the top or
bottom? bottom

2. How many states are there in the USA? (Don't laugh, some
people don't know) 50

X 3. In which hand is the Statue of Liberty's torch? left (right, remember Planet of the apes?)

X 4. What six colors are on the classic Campbell's soup label? Red, orange, black, blue, white, purple
(this is tough: red, white, blue, black, yellow, gold)

5. What two numbers on the telephone dial don't have letters
by them?1 and 0

6. When you walk does your left arm swing with your right or
left leg? (Don't you dare get up to see!) Right

7. How many matches are in a standard pack? 20

X 8. On the United States flag is the top stripe red or white? White (actually red on the top and also the bottom, 13 stripes)

X 9. What is the lowest number on the FM dial? 600 (this is another toughie, the lowest FM broadcast is 88.0, but most FM dials go to 87.7 which is actually where TV frequencies begin)

10. Which way does water go down the drain, counter or
clockwise? clock

11. Which way does a "no smoking" sign's slash run? \

X 12. How many channels on a VHF TV dial? 13 (again those communication licenses screw with logic, there is no channel one on a UHF TV tuner, so it begins with channel 2 and goes to channel 13 so the answer is 12)

13. On which side of a women's blouse are the buttons? left

14. Which way do fans rotate? clock

15. How many sides does a stop sign have? eight

16. Do books have even-numbered pages on the right or left
side? left

X 17. How many lug nuts are on a standard car wheel? four (answer is 5, but some dispute this because really compact Japanese imports have 4, I guess the operative word is "standard")

X 18. How many sides are there on a standard pencil? four (6 although a carpenter's pencil may have just 4, 2 wide sides and 2 thin sides, not sure though.

19. Sleepy, Happy, Sneezy, Grumpy, Dopey, Doc. Who's
missing? Lazy, bashful ??? bashful

20. How many hot dog buns are in a standard package? eight

21. On which playing card is the card maker's trademark? Ace (Ace of Spades - you can take it or mark it wrong)

X 22. On which side of a Venetian blind is the cord that
adjusts the opening between the slats? right (left, I got this one right on the test, but I always get it wrong when I try to adjust a venetian blind)

X 23. There are 12 buttons on a touch tone phone. What two
symbols bear no digits? 1 and 0 (that is correct on a dial phone, but on the touch tone it's the # pause and the * tone)

X 24. How many curves are there in the standard paper clip? 10 (that's some paper clip! actually 3 top, bottom and then inside)

25. Does a merry-go-round turn counter or clockwise? clock

5. Snopes on #10
Claim:   Thanks to the Coriolis effect, toilets flush clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the southern.

Status:   False.

Example:

Water in a pan, sink, or toilet rotates counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere. This is due to the Coriolis Effect, which is caused by the rotation of the Earth.

Origins:   Because the Earth is a globe spinning on an invisible axis, a point at its equator will make a circuit of 25,000 miles in the space of a day, but any point not on the equator will make a shorter round trip; the closer that point is to either of the poles, the shorter its trip will be. Put another way, a pencil at the equator travels 1,030 miles an hour, whereas another at Sarasota, Florida, moves at 930 miles per hour, and one at the North pole doesn't move at all.

This apparent difference in speed results in the Coriolis force, an effect that imparts a twist to largish events happening away from the equator. Best known is its effect on air masses: as they move away from the equator, their speed (which matches that of where they started from) appears to be faster than that of the surface over which they are traveling. This sets them turning in a clockwise twist in the northern hemisphere and a counterclockwise twist in the southern. (Before you complain we have that backwards, please click here.) Likewise, a cannonball fired due north will veer a teeny bit to the east, and one fired to the south will deflect ever so slightly to the west, something a skilled gunner would make an adjustment for.

The twisting effect of the Coriolis force is real and does influence certain large things like the movement of air masses, but the effect is so small that it plays no role in determining the direction in which water rotates as it exits from a draining sink or toilet. The Coriolis effect produces a measurable effect over huge distances and long periods of time, neither of which applies to your bathroom. Toilets and sinks drain in the directions they do because of the way water is directed into them or pulled from them. If water enters in a swirling motion (as it does when a toilet is flushed, for example), the water will exit in that same swirling pattern; as well, most basins have irregular surfaces and are not perfectly level, factors which influence the direction in which water spirals down their drains. The configuration of taps and drains is responsible for the direction of spin given to water draining from sinks and bathtubs to a degree that overwhelms the slight influence of the Coriolis force.

The belief that the Coriolis force influences the direction in which water drains from plumbing fixtures is widespread and has been repeated as fact in a number of venues, including popular television shows (such as world traveler Michael Palin's Pole to Pole) and even in textbooks. We can only speculate on why people are so enamored of this snippet of misinformation, guessing that it has something to do with the desire to find some of the mysteries of science in the realm of the everyday.

...we DUers as a group I believe always seek the truth. I was brushing my teeth and as always I let the water run and sure enough it was going down the drain clockwise. The test may give an incorrect impression of cause and effect, but it asks only about what we notice or see in our everyday lives. Would you care to give your score in your reply subject line? 77. well my toilet went counter-clockwise and my sink clockwise
Do we have any northerners here who can find a sink that goes counter clockwise? Do we have any southerners her who can verify if their sinks are going counter clockwise? If it is consistent, then we need some other explanation if it is not coriolis. I remember an advanced physics class where the prof was calculating coriolis forces and do not remember anything about the widespread story about drain rotation.

I am not sure why I should just take Snopes word for it.

14. 22. But three of those are WRONG.
Number two: There are only forty-six states in the US; the other four (Virginia, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Kentucky) are commonwealths.

Number ten: The Coriolis effect is unobservable on such a small scale. The water usually goes straight down.

Number seventeen: There is no "standard"; the answer is either four or five.

...that argument about Q2. on the number of states, but according to the U.S. Government or Federal statute, all 50 entities are recognized as states and the four commonwealths receive no less or more recognition because they call themselves a that name rather than referring to that sovereignty as a state. An earlier poster provided a near dissertation on Q10. As far as Q17 I don't believe I've ever seen one with just 4, at least not in the last 50 years. Thanks for your contribution.

74. Agreed
If not only are some answers wrong, the some of the questions are written horribly.

4 used to be the standard amount of lug nuts per wheel, but then the auto manufacturers begrudgingly agreed on 5 as you can lose one of 5 and still be safe much better than you can lose one of four lugnuts.

...would have been sufficient, although it's interesting to have the answers you selected also.

I am pretty observant. I don't know if it's because I'm a scientist, or because I watched all the Columbo episodes when I was a teenager. :-)

However, I cannot answer question #4 because I am mostly color blind (will you count this one against me?). So, you may ask, how did I get #1 correct? I have been told by others; and, when the traffic light is horizontal I have learned that the 'go' light is to the right.
