I joke about being more liberal than others, but some people
apparently really mean it when they assert that they are the MOST liberal, the MOST righteous and pure!!!

You must NEVER post in the lounge to be a TRUE liberal fighting for the cause! And if you never post in election forums, well, just HAND over that liberal crown you're wearing because you DON'T DESERVE IT!

:eyes:

I think I'm finally understanding what another DUer meant when he said some people act like they have the most "hard left street cred." I giggled when I first read that, but I've now met it a couple of times here and it's uuuuuuugly.

So. Anyway.

1. I cannot STAND that.
Liberalism is not a contest. We all do what we can. If someone sees an area where we can do better, inform gently, don't be an ass about it.

26. Put it this way...I left my house at 7:00...and got back at 7:30.
That includes futzing with the security system and walking to and from my cube. I do have to wear shirt and tie 4 days a week, so when it' REALLY humid, I might have to forego walking on those days. Also, walking home when it's 5 billion degrees would suck, too. But I think it might be worth it at least a few times a week.

4. I know.
Thanks for saying what I've been too frustrated to say nicely. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people more liberal than me (starting with my husband), but I don't see it as a contest, and it makes me a little sad for progressives in general when some among us feel that being downright mean and impolite is somehow a characteristic of liberals. Whenever I see "progressives" behaving like that, I'm reminded of the Mojo Nixon song, "Feelin' Existential."

17. Phil Ochs said it best:

I cried when they shot Medgar Evers
Tears ran down my spine
And I cried when they shot Mr. Kennedy
As though I'd lost a father of mine
But Malcolm X got what was coming
He got what he asked for this time
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I go to the civil rights rallies
And I put down the old D.A.R.
I love Harry and Sidney and Sammy
I hope every colored boy becomes a star
But don't talk about revolution
That's going a little bit too far
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I cheered when Humphrey was chosen
My faith in the system restored
And I'm glad that the commies were thrown out
From the A.F.L. C.I.O. board
And I love Puerto Ricans and Negros
As long as they don't move next door
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

Ah, the people of old Mississippi
Should all hang their heads in shame
Now I can't understand how their minds work
What's the matter don't they watch Les Crain?
But if you ask me to bus my children
I hope the cops take down your name
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

Yes, I read New Republic and Nation
I've learned to take every view
You know, I've memorized Lerner and Golden
I feel like I'm almost a Jew
But when it comes to times like Korea
There's no one more red, white and blue
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I vote for the democratic party
They want the U.N. to be strong
I attend all the Pete Seeger concerts
He sure gets me singing those songs
And I'll send all the money you ask for
But don't ask me to come on along
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

Sure, once I was young and impulsive
I wore every conceivable pin
Even went to socialist meetings
Learned all the old union hymns
Ah, but I've grown older and wiser
And that's why I'm turning you in
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I could rant on and on about it, but I've done that a few times already in the past few weeks.

The "I'm more liberal than you so your voice doesn't count" bullshit.

And also, let us not forget the other great liberal canard: "My pain is greater than yours, so your voice doesn't count."

Now I have run into that second one in person (I've never run into the first attitude in person--NEVER).

That second one is hard to counter the first time you hear it. As a liberal, you feel for them. But after the first few times, you realize it's mostly an act and it gets pretty old, fast.

Just makes me roll my eyes nowdays.

I am 50% japanese and the rest is considered a mutt mix. I have at least 20% native american in me and I take that as an insult that I would have to be 90% of anything to claim it.

The blood that you have bled is as nothing, it is trivial, it is worthless, and your story has no meaning whatsoever, so stop trying to push it on us, and let the people who've truly suffered get their voice out.

As a willing member of the oppressors, I find your story suspect and without meaning.

because I cannot bleed like a woman, you would then allow me my voice and stop oppressing me!

You don't know how awful men have it, not being able to bear children. Our emotional crying is far worse, far more devestation, far more a sign of our oppressed, minority status than any woman.

But, since you're a woman, YOU WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND!

I have only heard that term used by straight people to describe women they think are too pretty/feminine to be gay... basically, it's a back-handed insult insinuating that gay women aren't usually pretty or feminine. So, IMO, it's a rather odd way for a gay woman to describe herself, unless she has issues with her sexuality. But, what do I know?

:)

Yeah, I wondered why put a qualifier on it.

I never say things like "I'm a hairdye hetero. But I'd do Angelina."

Ok maybe I say that second part. But not the first.

No wait, in order to be parallel, I'd have to say "I'm a hiking boot hetero. But I'd do Angelina."

38. i am way left
but I almost never post in the arenas, GD or GD pol. too frustrating and not worth my time. Let me put it this way: I am so comfortable with my life-long, left-leaning status, I feel no need to waste my time trying to convince someone I don't know who just discovered being 'liberal' a few years back on an internet message board just how left I am, or how long I have been focused in the left.
not. worth. my. time.

People like that can kiss my ass. I got death threats for working for gay rights. I got shunned by gay guys for working with lesbians on issues like breast cancer. I got the holy fucking crap beaten out of me while escorting women into an abortion clinic.

I think I've got some left street cred. And I post mainly in the Lounge.

57. Yeah
Gay men can be as hateful to women as straight guys. Sometimes more so. Back in the 80's during the worst of the epidemic, before the new drugs, the gals jumped in, took care of the sick and the dieing, got fiercely political, and worked their butts off. All they asked in return was a little reciprocity. They didn't get it.

Men still get taken more seriously than women in our society. They didn't ask much, just that we join our voices to theirs. On women's health issues, on gender equality issues. They didn't get it.

It's still a sore point in certain parts of the LGBT community and a major sore point for me.

Fags aren't able to buy into heterosexual privilege, but we still get male privilege. And it's just as ugly.

Khash.

It's very rare for me to post outside of the lounge. I just prefer it here. But since I post solely in the lounge, I'm clearly not dedicated to leftist politics. :eyes:

72. Being a liberal isn't about talking about it
A liberal or democrat doesn't have to go around bragging that they are one. They live the lifestyle each and everyday. If one must tell people that they are liberal instead of showing it then they must not be all that liberal.

What's ugly is not seeing people put together food drives or doing outside work that helps the poor. Sure, we can run our mouths and "brag" about being liberal but its not what you talk about its what you do and your actions.

Im an old fart and I know what I am talking about. Actions speak louder than words. Lets get some groups of people together and do outreach to the needy. Then we can "prove" that we are liberal and democratic.

I do volunteer work and I think that we should have a volunteer group.

82. It's very easy to be a liberal sitting in front of a computer
and posting on a board....

It's quite another to actually go out and put your money where you mouth is....

Not saying a word against anyone who posts on this whole DU structure, but I have run into so many people who just don't get it in the thirty or so odd years I have been involved in getting people elected to office or running for office myself....

Sure I find it objectionable that Hillary or Liberman or anyone else doesn't get "it", what ever it is.....

But to me, I always try to remember that any politician in this country has to appeal to a wide coalition of voters just to get into the game...

I think far too many people didn't really realize, until the Bush 2000 fiasco, that this is not a parliamentarian form of government....

If you loose, no one cares what you think...

Believe me, the guy who beat me for State Senate never called to ask me how I felt about a certain bill.....

With that in mind, realize that in order to build a winning coalition, you have to cobble together people and activists who don't always see eye to eye...

Point, aim for the moon but be prepared to settle for the top off the big tree in your front yard....

That way you will take the small victories and stick around to fight for the larger ones as you go....

Aside, look at how long the anti-Choice people have stuck with the republican party with out any chance of winning for how long. Almost 30 years. And yet here they are, still accepting the tree tops and now, because they stuck to it, are almost ready to capture the moon....

Edited on Sat Jul-30-05 02:19 PM by Old_Fart
"They" stick in everyones minds because they are out doing what they believe in, like it or not.

We need to get out and start helping people in need and making it known who we are and what party we are affiliated with. If we only put in half of what we talk about than we would be half way to a victory on name recognition.

Democrats, liberals and the green party should be out helping people. Get the word out, try and get some media going (impossible but can be done).

The next election will be ripped off again if it is computerized but if we keep helping people we will win back the whitehouse.

My two cents. Thank you for posting your two cents, it was appreciated and needed.

to run for committee men so that they can have a say in how the paty is run, see how it is organized and get out from behind the computer screen....

I'm here because I have no place left to go, I'm disabled. But I still get out and do my part when I can...

I think I am going to compile a 50 state how when and whee you need to go to get elected to a party office.....

Give me a week or two and I will get that together and keep posting it every day If I have too....

I went from just voting to being a precinct captain (and if I didn't have the awesome precinct chair I did, I'd run for that) and I need to get training to be an election judge and I'm a deputy voter registrar. I go to my county meetings, in fact their website is my home page and I check out what activities I can go to, etc.

Also, writing checks whenever I can is helpful. Signing petitions to get good candidates on the ballot. Holding house parties. Democracy Fest 05 was in Austin recently and it was GREAT!!!

93. "Most of us activists are"
We need to help out in our communities and not earn titles alone. "Helping" is the key to letting people know that we care and what we are all about. It's the little guys heart that we have to touch. Telling him that we are a precinct captains doesn't do anything for "him". Bringing a box of food by or getting LIHEAP or cash to help him out when his utilities are off, is doing something.

103. Um, well I was addressing the other guy's post about being
active in your party. That doesn't mean I don't help the community. I feel like this is turning into a pissing contest, but I help through my UU church quite a bit, we hold monthly coffee houses (with live music) and all that money goes to the AIDS interfaith network and my family is currently raising money for an organization that has volunteer doctors who perform surgeries on children whose parents can't afford it. Just collecting spare change, my daughter was able to raise the $240 needed to partially fund one child's operation. It took a LONG time, but she did it and we're helping her because she wants to do it again.

Food banks, clothing drives, you name it, we do it. Haven't sold anything out of my garage, ever, because I'd rather give it to charity. In fact, we just gave our five year old chest freezer to a guy who works in the warehouse at my husband's company because his grown daughter and granddaughter have moved in with him and he needed the extra cold storage for food.

But I don't do those things as a Democrat, I do them as a human being.

funny how the original post of this thread was about how some liberals want to shove it in other people's faces how better-than-thou they are, how much they do, while gently chiding others and taking offense at lots of things and I'm seeing the very thing I described right here in this thread. You got me defending my activity in the party, my charitable deeds, everything.

109. I was mainly talking about staying active even if you
loose an election...

I remember when I first ran for office. I was running a very heavily Catholic area of town. It had gone republican largely on account of the Life issues....

So, I went before the local pro choice activist, who, by the way, all lived in an area of town that was very progressive...

I explained to them that I would vote for their agenda, vote against any infringement on reproductive rights but I perhaps said too much when I told them, truthfully, that I would not sponsor any bills.

The reason being is that the people who elected me to represent them deserved the respect of not rubbing the issue in their faces....

Well, I was the only democrat on the whole country ticket that did not get their endorsement......

It probably wouldn't have made too much difference in the long run, but it made an impression on the way I view politics...

Politics can't be my way or the highway....

that's a dictatorship.....

No politics their, Just a struggle for power....

that's the point I am trying to make...

the issue that you champion may not be that important to others. And you have to learn to live with that if you are going to build a successful coalition....
